Warren Van Wyk

Warren Van Wyk, age 92 of Lodgepole, SD; passed away on Monday evening, June 26, 2023 at the West River Regional Medical Center in Hettinger, ND.
Friends and Family gathered at 12 noon for a time of fellowship and luncheon on Wednesday, July 5, 2023 at the Holland Center Christian Reformed Church southwest of Lodgepole.  Following the luncheon and at 1:15pm, military honors were provided by the Johnson-Melary American Legion Post #115 of Hettinger, followed by the Memorial Service at 2:00pm.
Pastor Brad Burkhalter will officiate with burial at a later date in the Hettinger Cemetery.
Warren Peter Van Wyk was born on October 15, 1930 in Hettinger, ND to Gilbert and Marie (Stuit) Van Wyk. 
He was a life-long Perkins County resident.  He started grade school at South Fredlund and finished at Sydney school.  Warren attended two years of high school in Hettinger.
Warren worked one season tying wool for the Al Cornella crew and they sheared 10,000 head and never left the community.  He worked for Howard Parker and Raymond Brabazon.
Warren enlisted into the US Army on November 11, 1950 during the Korean Conflict.  He was stationed in Fort Hood, TX, and Germany.  On October 22, 1953, he was Honorably Discharged with the rank of Sergeant First Class.  Following his discharge, he worked for Raymond Brabazon and then from 1955 for Al Thole until his passing in 1977.
On July 3, 1957, Warren married Carolyn Haag.  To this union three sons were born.  Warren always said he was a true sheepman.  They had a set of twins, Kory and Rory and a single Paul.   Warren and Carolyn farmed and ranched together raising sheep, wheat, oats and hay.
Warren and Carolyn enjoyed traveling to Hawaii and on leaf peeping tours on the east coast, to Army Reunions, and on other trips.
In 2011, Carolyn passed away.  Warren continued to live on the ranch until 2021 when he moved to the Western Horizons Care Center in Hettinger.
Warren was a life-long member of the Holland Center Christian Reformed Church and served as a Elder and Deacon.
Warren is survived by his 3 sons and daughter-in-law, Kory Van Wyk, Lodgepole, SD; Rory  and Kaye Van Wyk, Mandan, ND; and Paul Van Wyk, Lexington, KY; a step granddaughter, Joeletta Jordan, Portland, OR; sister, Gladys Vliem, Hettinger, ND; sister-in-law, Janice Haag, Missoula, MT; brother-in-law, Dean Anderson, Hettinger, ND; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parent, his wife Carolyn, sister and 2 brothers-in-law, Thelma and Bud Sandgren and Jim Vliem, brother, Buster Van Wyk; sister, Elaine Anderson; a brother, Rodney in infancy; Carolyn’s parents, Henry and Evelyn Haag; brother and sister-in-law, Duwayne and Bonnie Haag; brother-in-law, Darrell Haag; nephew, Duwayne Haag Jr., grandnieces, Taylor Anderson; Carlie Malm, and grand nephew, Matthew Sandgren.
The family would like to thank everyone at the Western Horizan Care Center for the good care Dad received there and the West River Regional Medical Center for the good care during his last days.
