Vincent James Gunn was born on August 15, 1940 to Harold Gunn and Florence (Lewton) Gunn in Lemmon, South Dakota. He graduated from Lemmon High School in 1957 and attended college at South Dakota State University, graduating in 1963. Vince ranched with his father on the family ranch southeast of Lemmon prior to, and following, his military service. He served with the US Army from October 23, 1963 to July 27, 1965, including a tour to Okinawa, Japan. During his service he was awarded medals for Expert Rifle and Sharpshooter. In 1979 Vince joined the SD Extension Service as a County Agent. Upon retirement in 2002, he continued the work he loved the most - full time ranching, finally transitioning to full retirement in 2020.
Throughout his life Vince pursued a number of hobbies and volunteer activities. He turned his love of photography into a part-time business, served with the Perkins County 4-H Leaders, Perkins County Weed Board, Perkins County Fair Board, St. Mary’s Church Board, Knights of Columbus, American Legion Post 66, and as local grazing expert in litigation following the Pautre Fire. Vince loved the land and was a good steward. He used the word “precious” only twice in his life – when speaking of his three children and in reference to the moisture when God blessed the land. He was a good friend to neighboring ranchers, helping whenever he was needed. His faith was strong.
Vince and Susan (Jangula) Gunn were married November 25, 1972 and together raised three children: Michael, LeAnn (Matt) Fechter, and Elizabeth (Phil) VanOverschelde. Along with his wife and children, Vince is survived by his grandchildren, Eric and Liam Fechter and Elliot VanOverschelde, two sisters, Lorinda (Dave) Bossman and Roxann (Craig) VanBockel, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Florence Gunn.
Memorials have been established with Catholic Social Services/Adoption and Perkins County 4-H Leaders.
