Susan Jordan (aka Carolyn “Sue” Hasselbalch), age 82, was called home to heaven on September 15, 2024 after suffering from two strokes, dementia, and other health issues at Good Samaritan Nursing Home in New Underwood, South Dakota.
Sue was born on May 25, 1942, in Springfield, Missouri to Delois (Fletcher) and Coy Mulanax. Her two sisters, Lena and Shirley, welcomed her home.
Sue lived in California with her mother for several years after her parents got a divorce. They moved to Albion, Nebraska where Sue graduated from high school. Sue went on a blind double date and ended up finding that the other guy “Jack” and her were more compatible. Jack and Sue were married in February 1964. They moved around and stumbled upon North Shore Lodge (NSL) at Lake McConaughy in Lemoyne, Nebraska. On September 3, 1968, they decided to have their own business and bought North Shore Lodge for $26,000. They were blessed with three children: Jackie, Ginger, and Gina. Jack and Sue decided to incorporate North Shore and moved to Boonville, Missouri. Sue graduated from nursing school and was an RN for many years. Jack and Sue got very involved with the church and hardly missed a Sunday. Every year they would come back several times for board meetings and to enjoy the lake.
In 1983 the family moved to Lemoyne for one summer to manage North Shore and never looked back. Sue continued being an RN until she was needed more at the Lodge. Sue made delicious homemade pies (vinegar pie was her specialty) and specials for the restaurant as well as helping manage NSL. The family enjoyed winters off going snowmobiling. She loved to read.
After Jack died, Sue ran NSL for five years with her daughter, Ginger Almond and husband Mark. Sue took several trips with her daughters. Sue, Jackie, and Gina went to Israel. Sue and Ginger went to Mexico. She moved to South Dakota to be closer with her oldest daughter and family. Sue moved to Maryland for a short time to be closer to Jackie, then decided to move back to South Dakota.
Sue is survived by her daughter Jackie (Robb) Webb of Keystone, South Dakota; daughter Gina (Rodney) Palser of Otis, Colorado; grandkids Cap Herber, Shaley (Paul) Herber-Kruse of Kadoka, South Dakota; Abe (Hinaka) Herber of Okinawa, Japan; Emily (Schyler) Palser Hellman of Otis, Colorado; Drew (Morgan) Palser of Cheyenne, Wyoming; and great-grandkids Brayden and Nellie Herber; Vincent Hellmann; Riaru and Mia Sue Herber; and Jordan Palser.
Sue was preceded in death by her parents; sisters; adopted brother Terry; husband, Jack, of 29 years; and daughter, Ginger.
In accordance with Sue’s wishes, she was cremated and no services.
