Rose Martin, age 97, of Lemmon, South Dakota, passed away on Friday morning, October 25, 2024 at the Five Counties Nursing Home in Lemmon, South Dakota.
Funeral services for Rose were held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 2, 2024 at the American Lutheran Church in Bison, South Dakota. Vicar Jen Seffrood officiated with burial to follow in the Gallaway Cemetery at Meadow, South Dakota.
Rose Schopp was born on her parents’ farm south of Athboy, SD. She attended Twin Butte School and graduated from Lemmon High School in 1947. She attended six weeks of summer school and took a state exam and then returned home the following Fall to teach. She taught school for four more years and then decided to change occupations and obtained a job as salesperson at Smith’s Rexall Drug in Lemmon until 1954. She then married Floyd Martin in 1954 and moved to a farm northwest of Bison until the farm was sold. They moved to Lemmon SD and decided town life was not for them and in 1960 bought the Kenneth Brown homestead northwest of Meadow, SD. They resided there until 1969 and then purchased the Adolph Lutz homestead. She was asked in the 1960’s to teach at Meadow Central as there was a teacher shortage. She attended summer sessions and attended other college classes at Black Hills State College earning her Bachelor Degree in Science in Education in 1973. She taught 26 more years, mostly in Bison, SD. as fifth grade teacher and retired in May of 1989 after 31 years of teaching.
Floyd died in 2014, and Rose continued to live in their home with her son, Allan, until she entered the Nursing Home in May of 2023. Her hobbies included reading, embroidering dish towels and Swedish Weaving, making various gifts for family and friends. She was also a great cook and was known for her delicious Kuchen and rolls. She was active in her church ladies’ group and enjoyed bowling with friends. She was able to do some traveling and especially enjoyed Sunday drives with Floyd in various places in ND, SD, MT and WY. Many stops were made so Floyd could scrutinize various implement and auto dealers.
Rose passed away on Friday, October 25, 2024, at the Five Counties Nursing Home in Lemmon, SD.
She is survived by her sons, Allan Martin, Shadehill, SD, and Duane (Jo Ellen) Martin, Kalispell, MT; daughter, Bonnie (Bob) Crow, Bison, SD; grandchildren, Joe Crow (special friend Theresa Cross), Anchorage, AK, Micaela (fiancé, Will Merry), Rapid City, SD, Colt Martin, Spearfish, SD; step-grandson, Tim Martin, Phoenix, AZ; great-grandchildren, Jaeden (Eli) Vaden, Rapid City, SD, Tayley and Kiley Martin, Rapid SD, and Landon Crow, Anchorage, AK; brother, Edwin Schopp, Roanoke, VA; sister-in-law, Lillian Martin, Bismarck, ND.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John J and Amelia Schopp; brothers, Johnny, Emil, Richard and Fred Schopp; her husband Floyd in 2014 and her son, Dennis, in 2020.
