James Robert Grimes

Bob "James Robert" Grimes passed away on June 4th 2024 at the age of 83 in Vancouver, Washington. Bob was born on December 20th 1940 in Uvalde, Texas to Alma “Jean” and Ruben Forth.
Bob grew up in South Dakota on the family ranch where they raised cattle. Growing up on a cattle ranch there was always plenty to do and he developed a great work ethic from this. No matter the weather or how he felt, the animals depended on him. He always got up early to feed them, scratch their heads, and be sure the fencing was secure.
He spoke of riding his horse, Rusty, to and from Elementary school that was just 2 ½ miles from the house. He then went onto Kadoka High School where he played basketball, football, and ran track. His favorite subject was math. Bob went to college at the School of Mines where he studied Engineering.
Bob served in the Army and specialized in radio communication repair. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and Expert Rifle during his time served, reflecting his exemplary character and skill.  His most passionate career was his thriving construction company he went on to own, and named 6-K after his family’s cattle brand. He specialized in crafting homes and pole barns, leaving a lasting mark on countless families and communities in various states.
In 1985 Bob and his family moved back to South Dakota to support his mother on the family ranch. He found great joy in returning to his roots and cherishing the simple pleasures of ranch life. Bob loved to saddle up his horse and take rides around the property with Jenelle, sharing his love of the ranch life with her. Summers were particularly special, filled with his mother’s peach milkshakes after a hot day of bailing hay and working on the ranch.
He finished his working career as Camp Host at many national parks around the US, which he enjoyed with his dog, Tidbit.
Bob's most favorite thing to do was dance! If there was a live country band playing within an hour drive, you could bet he’d be there dancing with infectious enthusiasm and teaching others his moves. Bob also enjoyed crocheting, macrame, building anything with wood, rafting, riding horses, and a nice glass of bourbon and seven-up.
Bob always had a smile on his face and was looking for the next exciting adventure to share with that special someone.
He is survived by his children  Tammy Miller, Robbie Grimes, Michelle Mulholland, and Jenelle Prentice; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and his half-brother Ronald Forth. Bob was preceded in death by his mother Jean Grimes and his stepfather, John W. Grimes.
Bob's legacy will live on through memories shared by his family and friends, whose lives he touched with his kindness, laughter and unyielding love. Raise a glass for Bob!
