DeWayne “Shorty” Emmett Hagler

DeWayne E. Hagler (“Tuffy” – “Shorty”)
Nov 22, 1933 – Oct 19, 2024
DeWayne Emmett Hagler passed at home while surrounded by family. He was born on November 22, 1933 to Leo and LeLa Hagler in Martin, SD. He grew up working on ranches and helping at the family store. He enjoyed training horses and the western lifestyle. In the ‘50s, he served in the United States Army and upon returning home, he and Betty (Burke) Hagler were married.
It is rare for someone to be more commonly known by a nickname rather than their birth name.  But he was an overachiever, being known as “Tuffy” in the Dakotas by friends and relatives. Upon settling with his family, in Kuna Idaho, he became known as “Shorty”.  We are sure there were other nicknames but they were not to be printed…
Shorty worked in construction early on, and then spent 35 years in the gas and oil industry. He worked for Intermountain Gas, Northwest Pipe Line, Hoods corporation and then tried his hand in the oil field with his seismic drilling company.
In 1985 Shorty and Fay were married and started their life together. They enjoyed 39 years of love and endless adventures. Their life was full of fun, family and friends.
Shorty had a passion for meeting people and making good horses! It was natural for him to become engrained in the regional rodeos, Snaffle Bit Futurity competitions and Jackpot ropings (especially 10 headers). He was well known in the Northwest for his fierce competitive nature and great lasting friendships.
In addition, he enjoyed hunting both big game and upland birds, a good game of pool, cribbage, golf, riding ATVs and was a handy bowler. He was constantly re-inventing himself and overall, he enjoyed life and a good challenge!
Shorty made friends where ever he went, whether it was the donut shop or stopped in road construction.
Shorty is survived by his wife of 39 plus years, Fay M Hagler. Sisters: Neva Lafee  and Betty Royer. Children: Jim Hagler (Gayle), Dan Hagler, Terri Hagler, Ted Hagler (Stephanie), Debbie Poen (Dan), Louise Ehlers (Mike).  In addition, he was blessed with 5 surviving grandchildren: John C Hagler, Jenica Nickels, Macy Hoch, Cody Ehlers, Carli Ehlers and 2 beautiful Great grandchildren: Miss Ruth and Lucy Joni Nickels.
He was preceded in death by his parents and 9 siblings, and one wonderful granddaughter; Joni Rachel Hagler.
The family would like to thank St. Lukes Hospice for their care and kindness.
Please join us for the celebration of DeWayne’s (Tuffy, Shorty) life Thursday November 7th at 1pm, Greenhurst Bible Church at 5423 E Greenhurst Rd, Nampa, ID 83686.
