Rita McCurdy Scott died on November 7, 2024 in El Dorado Hills, California where she was in hospice care.
Rita was born March 2, 1939 in Hughes County, South Dakota. Her Parents were Pearl Price McCurdy and Frank McCurdy. In Rita’s pre-school years, the family lived on the family farm near White River, S.D. They moved to Murdo for Rita to attend school.
Rita is survived by her first husband, Forrest Godfrey. Her second husband, Don Scott, pre-deceased her.
Children are Jay Godfrey (spouse Lisa) of Columbus, Ohio, Jerry Godfrey of Folsom, Calif., and his former spouse Kristi Godfrey Reed. Grandchildren from that union are Robert and Jennifer. Rita’s brother, Dwight McCurdy, (spouse Kitty) lives near Austin, Texas, and brother Dale McCurdy (spouse Mark) resides in Phoenix, Ariz.
Rita graduated from High School in Littleton, Colo. in 1962 where the family was living at the time. She later attended the University of Colorado at Boulder. After Rita’s marriage, the family moved to California, living at various times in Santa Maria, Crescent City and Camarillo. Rita earned her degree and teaching credentials from California State University, Northridge, and from California Lutheran University while caring for her two small children. She later taught 5th and 6th grades, and was a dedicated and effective teacher for nearly 30 years.
Rita’s kind words, loving smile, giving spirit and excellent cooking skills will be remembered by family, students, friends and neighbors.
