Mary Anne Hoffmann entered this world on July 1,1932, in her grandparents’ home near Opal, SD. She was the second of 7 children born to John and Gertrude (Moelter) Hoffmann. Mary Anne attended Faith School, graduating in 1950. In 1951 she attended Black Hills Teachers College at Spearfish SD. She taught 1year of school in rural Meade County. After getting married she continued as a substitute teacher. MaryAnne also worked for Dr White in Faith for several years.
Mary Anne married the love of her life, Glenn Palmer, on January 26,1952. At the Meade County Courthouse, with his brother Dave and her sister Delores, as witnesses to the union. Glenn and MaryAnne enjoyed playing cards and going to various dances in the community. Glenn and MaryAnne were blessed with 5 children, Glenda (December 1952), John (February 1956), Mary (December 1956), Jarvis (April 1959) and Noma (March 1963). After working various jobs as ranch hands, they purchased their ranch west of Faith in 1966. Running Milk Cows, Beef cattle and Pigs kept them busy until Glenn’s health declined. After Glenn’s passing in June 1979 MaryAnne continued to ranch with the help of her son Jarvis and daughter in law Marilyn and held down various jobs in town. When giving up her jobs in town, she volunteered for many, many hours at the Faith Community Action Team. She was always sorting clothes, helping with rummage sales and fundraisers to keep the hall going until her health declined. MaryAnne joined the love of her life on January 29th, 2025.
MaryAnne is survived by sisters Delores Fair (Gordon Nebr.) and Myrna Collins (Faith, SD), sister-in-law Darliene Keffeler (Sturgis, SD) sister-in-law Pat Hoffmann (Lusk, Wyo) and brother-in-law Gordon Speakman (Milton Freewater, Oregon). Daughter Glenda (Mickey) McGinnis, Son Jarvis (Marilyn) Palmer, Daughter Noma (Dennis) Welter all of Faith SD. Grandkids Heather (Mickey) Kirkley, Rebecca (Steve) Anderson, MaKayla (Jesse) Komes, Amanda (Travis) Few, Megan Palmer, Ryan (Erica) Palmer, Glenn Palmer, Skyler (Jacie) Welter, and Penny (Eric) Androff and numerous great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
MaryAnne is preceded in death by her parents John and Gertrude Hoffman, Husband Glenn, Brothers John Jr., Marlyn and Ernie Hoffman, children John and Mary Palmer and numerous Sister and brother in laws. A memorial has been established at the Faith Community Action Team in memory of MaryAnne Palmer.
A celebration of life will be held March 8, 2025, 1:00 pm at the Faith Community Action Building, Main Street, Faith, SD.
Burial will be held at a later date at the Black Hills National Cemetary.
