Marilyn Rose Kellogg was born November 2, 1934 ten miles north of Timber Lake, South Dakota to Wayne & Lydia Kellogg during one of the driest years of the “dirty thirties”.  Doctor Baer came out to the farm for the delivery and Marilyn liked to joke that, “A bear delivered me!”
She attended Scherer Country School and graduated from Timber Lake High in 1952.  She went to one year at Black Hills Teachers College in Spearfish before becoming a teacher in a country school at the age of 18.  She continued to teach at country schools while continuing her education over the summers.
In 1955 Marilyn married Leo Brockel, a cowboy from Bison, South Dakota. Leo was impressed with the teaching profession and went to college for a change of career.  Marilyn & Leo taught as a team in Tip Top, Watauga and Morristown before moving to McIntosh where they retired in 1992.
The Brockels raised three children, Audie, Kelvin and Marcy; spending many enjoyable summers at the Kellogg farm north of Timber Lake. Marilyn grew up in a Christian family and joined the Baptist Church as an adult.  She was president of the Women’s Missionary Fellowship and taught the upper grade Sunday School class for many years.  She especially enjoyed having the kids perform meaningful skits.
She was a member of the McIntosh Extension Club for 25 years and was an EMT in McIntosh for 13 years.
Marilyn was a very thrifty person, raising a big garden, canning, sewing clothes, shopping at Thrift Stores, going to rummage sales and even taking sandwiches shopping in Bismarck until her kids told her, “Enough already!”  She loved jigsaw puzzles, crosswords, game shows on TV, playing cards, reading and even hunting & fishing.
Marilyn passed away on Sunday evening, October 2, 2016 at the Western Horizons Care Center in Hettinger, North Dakota.
Marilyn is survived by her children; Audie (Wendy) Brockel, Lemmon, SD; Kelvin (Jean) Brockel, Shadehill, SD; and Marcy (Barry) VanZee, Mitchell, SD; two brothers Richard (Ramona) Kellogg, Vermillion, SD; & Duane Kellogg, Oklahoma City, OK; and seven grandchildren, Levie Healy, Zebedee Brockel, Daniel (Brooke) Van Zee, Cara and Craig Van Zee, Kiana and Jim Brockel; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a sister Darlene Baldwin, her parents and her husband, Leo in 2010.
