Katherine Hill

Katherine Hill of Philip formerly of Gregory, South Dakota, died on Monday, October 8, 2018 at the Philip Nursing Home at the age of 95. Katherine (Neuroth) Hill, 95, of Philip and formerly Gregory, passed away October 8, 2018 at the Philip Nursing Home. Kate was born March 13, 1923, on the family farm north of Burke, South Dakota, to Ben and Charlotte (Farley) Neuroth. Katherine’s siblings include Eileen, Wilfred, Frances, and Warren. In 1936, when Kate was 13, her mother passed away. Her father moved to Seattle in the 1940s, where he married Laura and they had twins, Robert and Barbara. Katherine attended classes through the sixth grade in a one-room rural schoolhouse. She did well in school and was allowed to skip second grade, which led to her graduation from Burke High School in 1940 along with future husband, Harley Hill. Following the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Katherine entered nurse’s training under the Cadet Nurse Corps at St. Vincent’s in Sioux City, IA, graduating as an RN in 1944. Harley and Katherine married later that year on September 22, 1944, while stationed in Beeville, Texas. After finishing their tour, they returned to Gregory where they operated a hardware store and managed the Gregory Airport. There were also the family operations of ranching, farming, and house construction over the years. They had four children, Rollie (1950), Randy (1960), Donna (1963), and DeAnn (1966). Katherine returned to nursing and worked at the Rosebud Nursing Home in Gregory for 18 years. She was a compassionate nurse who took great pride in the care of her patients. Katherine was also a den leader with the Cub Scouts when the boys were young and was a #1 fan of her children as they participated in sports throughout their high school years. Katherine was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Daughters and was an avid bridge player. She loved family get togethers and was well known for her fried chicken. In her retirement, she has enjoyed bridge clubs, reading, crosswords, and a birthday club which was together for over 40 years. Katherine has resided in Philip since 2006 where Donna has done a wonderful job of caring for our mother. Katherine is survived by her four children, Rollie (Elle) Hill of Rapid City, Randy (Dolores) Hill of Dallas, Texas, Donna (Ray) Smith of Philip, DeAnn Hill of Omaha; 10 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; sister Frances Hudlicky and sister-in-law Rose Neuroth both of Seattle, Washington; and sister-in-law and best friend Marcie Peterson of Cameron Park, California. She is preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, one sister, and Harley in 2016. A visitation will be held 5-6 p.m. with a prayer and rosary service at 6 p.m. MST on Thursday, October 11, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Philip. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 p.m. CST on Friday, October 12, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Gregory. Interment will be at a later date at the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church Cemetery in Emmet Township. Arrangements are with Rush Funeral Home of Philip.
