Eugene "Gene" Lund, age 102, Faith, SD, passed away at his residence at the West Hills Village in Rapid City, SD on Friday, November 24, 2017.
Visitation for Gene will be Wednesday, November 29, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., followed by a Service of Remembrance at 1:00 p.m., all at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Faith, SD. Pastor Mark Richardson will officiate and burial will follow at the Faith Cemetery.
Eugene “Gene” Lund was born at Faith, SD to Oscar and Mary (Weinandy) Lund on February 22, 1915 and raised at the family ranch in Ziebach County, southeast of Faith. His mother passed away giving birth to his twin sisters in January of 1919, when Gene was going on four years old. He attended the Arrowhead and Cloverdale Schools through the 8th grade. His aunt, Elizabeth Weinandy, assisted his father in raising the family and continued to live on the ranch until her passing.
Gene worked for area ranchers, with his father, and herded sheep in those early years. During the 1930’s the Lund sheep were cared for by Gene in the Red Scaffold area.
Thereafter Gene concentrated on raising livestock until retiring in 1989. Gene was married to Martha Geiken Bachman in 1975 at Rapid City, SD and they lived in their home in Faith, caring for the ranch from there.
Gene enjoyed his involvement in the Faith Lodge #168 A.F. & A.M., was a lifelong member of the Bethel Lutheran Church, being baptized and confirmed there. He enjoyed his card playing friends and delivered Meals on Wheels in Faith for over 35 years.
Gene passed away on Friday, November 24, 2017 at the Westhills Village in Rapid City, SD.
He is survived by three nieces, Linda (Tim) Brady, Littleton, CO, Vicki (Tom) Newell, Denver, CO and Patty (Kaarel Kaljot) Lund, Oakland, CA; one nephew, Mel (Lynne) Gerlach, Gold Canyon, AZ; and great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his aunt, Elizabeth Weinandy; his wife, three sisters, Audrey, Joan and Eudora; and one brother, Vern Lund.
Memorials are preferred to the Faith Education Foundation and the Bethel Lutheran Church in Faith, SD.
