Carl J. Humphrey

Carl John Humphrey, age 88, of Wasta, S.D., passed away on June 11, 2017 at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital with his family by his side. He will be missed dearly as a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

Carl was born on February 15, 1929 to Elmer and Bertha (Sparks) Humphrey and grew up in the Veiwfield community attending rural schools and graduating from New Underwood High School. On September 13, 1947, he married Anna Lee Piglowski and they established their home on the Ivan George place in Veiwfield. With the birth of their daughter, Linda, during the ‘49 blizzard, Carl rode by horseback to New Underwood to get the doctor who was from NewYork and had never ridden a horse before.

During the early 60’s he worked on Interstate 90 when it was being constructed. He also had a caterpillar with which he did dirt work around the surrounding area along with the ranch and dairy. In 1997, Carl and Anna Lee moved to Wasta and during this time in Wasta, Carl moved trees for Eastern Pennington County Conservation District. Carl resided in Wasta until after the death of Anna Lee at which time he moved to Silver Leaf Retirement Center in Philip, and then to the Philip Nursing Home due to his declining health.

Carl served on the Red Top School Board and also served on the Town Board in Wasta. Carl had an interest with wood working and he made each of his children and grandchildren many wooden items including puzzles, toys and tables. Carl always enjoyed a good cup of coffee and to visit with neighbors and friends - no one was a stranger to Carl for very long.

Carl leaves behind his children, Linda (Ron) Opstedahl, Union Center, Marilyn (Dave) Stover, Owanka, Cathy Hymans, Sioux Falls, David (Billie) Humphrey, Quinn, Peggy (Roger) Gilliam, Rozet, Wyo., Aaron (Mary) Humphrey, Chaska, Minn.; 16 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; and brother-in-law, Jack Aldrich, Billings, Mont.

Carl was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Lee in 2013; his parents; siblings, Clarence, Lucille, and Alice; son, Stephen Humphrey; sons-in-law, Larry Geoden and Harold Hymans; and granddaughter, Megan Atkins.

Services were held June 17, 2017 at the Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home in Rapid City, with Pastor Harold Delbridge officiating. Burial followed at the Lakeside Cemetery in Owanka.

Memorial’s may be made to New Underwood Good Samaritan Center or a charity of the donor’s choice.

It’s all part of the Master’s Plan,
A step on the road to home,
When you are lonely and sick of heart,
Go to the friends we know,
And bury your sorrows in doing good deeds,
Miss me, but let me go.
