Berneta Alice Bloom

Berneta Alice Bloom, 95, was born in New Underwood, SD on March 10, 1926 and passed away at Monument Hospital on January 21, 2022.
Berneta spent the majority of her life on her ranch in Scenic, SD. She grew up as an only child, so the great plains and badlands served as her playground. Growing up Berneta learned to live tough and be self-sufficient. She went to county school and subsequently graduated from New Underwood High School in 1944. She continued to work on the ranch while completing her college degree in Spearfish during the summer. She was a school teacher for 15 years and a substitute teacher for 10 years. Her career included teaching six years at Ellsworth Air Force Base and the remaining years in the Scenic area country schools.
Berneta married Walter Bloom on February 3, 1954 and they had three children together. Berneta spent her time driving tractors, raising cattle, sheep, pigs, and chickens. She was always happiest outdoors, growing her garden and caring for her animals. Berneta continued to ranch well into her 80’s and left a great legacy.
She is survived by her three children, Cheryl (Dale) Deuter of New Underwood, SD, Jess (Nonie) Bloom of Newcastle, Wyoming, and Frank (Marcene) Bloom of Scenic, SD; along with five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. She is preceded by her parents, Carl and Lura Stankey, and her husband, Walter Bloom.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 26, 2022 at Kirk Funeral Home.  Visitation will be one-hour prior to the service.  Burial at the Scenic Cemetery.
