Alice Wilkinson, age 91

Alice Wilkinson

Alice Wilkinson, age 91, passed away Dec. 6, 2017. Due to congestive heart failure, Alice’s health declined this past year and she developed pneumonia, from which she peacefully passed into the arms of her savior, Jesus.

She was ready; the day before she passed away, she told Donna, “I already have him pictured – he‘s a beautiful man, tall and handsome.” She is hurting no more!

Alice Wilkinson was born Nov. 30, 1926, in Casselton, N.D., to Henry and Emma Peck.

She graduated from eighth grade and worked cleaning houses until 1945 when she moved to Sorum, S.D., to work for her Uncle Murel and Aunt Doris Peck.

She met Glen Wilkinson and they were married April 19, 1947 at Belle Fourche. Glen and Alice lived on various places until 1962 when they moved to the Papka place with their son, Joe, and daughter, Donna, where they lived for the next 40 years. When Glen passed away in 2002, Alice bought a home in Buffalo where she lived until 2014. She then moved to an apartment at Peaceful Prairie Estates in Buffalo.

Alice’s mission in life: feed people. On holidays it was to over-feed people. Whenever friends and neighbors stopped by, the coffee was always on and the cookie jar was full. And you were always invited to stay for a meal. Alice loved her garden and froze and canned huge amounts of fruit, vegetables, and meat. When she moved off the farm to Buffalo, she had enough in the cellar to last for years.

Alice taught children’s Sunday School for decades at Homme Lutheran Church in Prairie City, passing her faith on to her own children and many others. She was a hard worker, picking up odd jobs to earn needed extra cash. Among other jobs, Alice worked at the cafe in Prairie City,  cleaned the fair building in Bison, cooked for the Bar H Ranch, and worked for Joe and his wife, Karen, at the Reva Store.

Alice tremendously enjoyed being Gramma to her four grandkids and Gramma-Gramma to her seven and counting great- grandkids.

She is survived by her children, Joe (Karen) Wilkinson, Reva, and Donna (Galen) Niederwerder, New Underwood; four grandchildren, Bob Wilkinson, Jennifer (Ole) Sjomeling, Eric (Marcia) Niederwerder and Tyler (Katie) Niederwerder; seven great-grandchildren, Darby and Jordan Sjomeling, Kaylena, Colton, McKenzie, Levi and Carson, Niederwerder; and her sister, Ruth.

Services were held Dec. 11, 2017, at the Slim Buttes Lutheran Church east of Reva. Burial followed in the church Cemetery with Rev. Henry Mohagen officiating.
