While in college, he was united in marriage to Judith (Cooke) and they had two daughters, Deb and Cheryl.
After graduation in 1963, he went to work in Kansas City at the CPA firm Touche, Ross, Bailey and Niven for eight years. He enjoyed life on the South Dakota ranch, working with his horses, helping with the Kjerstad’s cattle operation and all the friends he made in the community. He became a very accomplished woodworker and enjoyed making items for others. In 2004, he suffered a ruptured aorta, which led to the decline in his health.
