Some gave all … veterans honored

Carol Edwards was the main guest speaker at the Wheeler-Brooks American Legion Post #173 Memorial Day service program, Monday, May 30.
Edwards held the 2014-15 term as the South Dakota American Legion Auxiliary department president. Next year she will hold the office of American Legion Auxiliary national chairman of community service.
“Nothing can fill the hole left behind by a fallen loved one, a fallen soldier,” admitted Edwards. She asked the audience to remember why their loved ones joined the service. They did so, often, for “a cause larger than one’s self. They were ordinary people who responded in extraordinary times.”
Edwards said that the question, was it worth it, cannot be asked of the surviving loved ones. It is a question that can only be asked of the fallen, to be answered when their surviving loved ones eventually see them again. Until then, we, as those for whom the veterans died, must strive to make it worth it.
Edwards stated that we must live so that memorial can be put back in Memorial Day.
