Wauneta Stoeser

Wauneta Katheryn Briggs was born at Carlin, SD, to Walter and Katie (Jones) Briggs, on January 24, 1925. Wauneta died August 19, 2006, at St. Mary's Hospital in Pierre, with her children and grandchildren at her bedside.

Mass of Christian burial was held Tuesday, August 22, at St. John's Catholic Church with Fr. Brian Christenson officiating.

Burial was at Scotty Philip Cemetery, Ft. Pierre.

Wauneta was born in a small home in the country, by the Cheyenne River, and raised in a log house on Robbs Flat. She went to a small country school, about one-half mile from their home, Carlin School, and graduated from Riggs High School in Pierre.

She was united in marriage to her sweetheart, Roy Leo Stoeser, on March 5, 1943, at St. John's Catholic Church in Ft. Pierre, SD. To this union were born 12 children: Diane, Linette, Tim, Keith, Kathy, Bert, twins Reed and Randy, Julie, twins Vince and Vicky and Galen.

Wauneta and Roy Leo lived in Clinton, IA, during the time Roy Leo was in the U.S. Army. They returned to the farm at Hayes, SD, in December of 1945. In the spring of 1946, they bought the old Burus place and lived there until February of 1951. They moved to Fowler, IN, in February of 1951, and lived there until October of 1952, when they moved back to South Dakota to take over the home place near Hayes. In 1969, Wauneta and Roy purchased a home in Ft. Pierre as the six youngest children were getting ready for the high school years. During those years, Neta provided day care to many children, opened her home to board country students during the school year, and later worked and retired at BankWest.

Neta's love was her family, she was a wonderful cook, baking the best homemade cinnamon rolls, bread, cakes and cookies - and lots of them. Neta also loved to sew, sewing many of the Christmas and Easter dresses and later making many quilts for her family. Neta and Roy's grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her special gifts from God. "Grandma Great" was a very special lady to these children.

Wauneta loved dancing with Roy Leo and they spent many Saturday nights twirling around the various dance floors of South Dakota with their dear friends.

Wauneta is survived by her children, Diane Gottschalk and her husband, Bud, of Broken Bow, NE; Linette Vetos and her husband, Paul, of Missoula, MT; Roy (Tim) Stoeser of Navarre, FL; BK (Keith) Stoeser and his wife, Kitty, of Navarre, FL; Kathy Peterson and her husband, Roger, of Philip, SD; Bert Stoeser and his wife, Anna, of Winner, SD; Reed Stoeser and his wife, Suzanne, of Ft.
