Volleyball season opener, Philip Scotties fall in fifth game to White River Tigers

The first game of the season for the Lady Scotties volleyball team was in White River on Saturday, August 30.

Requiring all five games to determine the best of five, the Tigers narrowly defeated the Scotties. With four close games and one game somewhat easily taken by Philip, the total points for the evening were 107 for Philip and 104 for White River. The final scores were 22-25, 21-25, 25-16, 25-22 and 14-16.

The winner of each game is the first to reach 25 points with at least a two point lead over their opponents. The fifth game, if there is one, goes to only 15 points with at least a two point lead.

Serving: Philip - 92 of 105, with 13 aces (non-returned serves). Individual leaders: Kayla O'Connell - 11 of 11 (4 aces), Taylor Holman - 18 of 19 (2 aces), Abby Fitzgerald - 25 of 29 (4 aces).

Setting: White River - 129 of 152 (27 assists).

Hitting: Philip - 159 of 175, with 47 kills. Leaders: Hook - 62 of 70 (24 kills), Kenzy Pinney - 33 of 36 (9 kills), Fitzgerald - 28 of 32 (7 kills).

Hitting (Attacks): White River - 118 of 140 (37 kills).

Blocking: Philip - 3 of 12, with 3 kills.

Digging: Philip - 111 of 141. Leaders: O'Connell - 22 of 30, Pinney - 19 of 28, Holman - 33 of 34.

The junior varsity also competed during this meet. They lost their two out of three games. There was no "C" team game.

The next meet for the Philip Lady Scotties will be a home match hosting the Kadoka Lady Kougars on Thursday, September 4. The next meet will be in Murdo against the Jones County Coyotes on Tuesday, September 9.
