Vivian Hamar
Vivian Hamar, age 82 of Long Valley, South Dakota, died October 5, 2009, at her home in Long Valley.
Vivian Delores Huisman was born April 30, 1927, in South Sioux City, Nebraska, the daughter of Thomas Andrew and Margaret (Daniels) Huisman. She grew up in South Sioux City and graduated from high school in 1945. She was a member of the National Honor Society in high school. Vivian won a job to work in Washington, DC, after which she then worked for the Dakota County Judge in South Sioux City, Nebraska.
Vivian was united in marriage to Wayne Hamar on September 18, 1948 at Hope Lutheran Church in South Sioux City. In the spring of 1949, they moved to Long Valley, South Dakota, where she lived in a sod home. On August 4th, 1949, their first child Darla Gene was born. On January 1st, 1950, they moved to the Bar Five Ranch owned by Henry and Kate Zickrick. On August 22nd, 1952, Michael Wayne was born, followed by Debra Lynne on July 26th, 1958.
Vivian was a charter member of Our Savior Lutheran Church and Ladies Aid Group in Long Valley.
She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post #240 of Martin, and a longtime member of the Bennett County Extension Club.
Vivian loved gardening, cooking, and entertaining family and friends. She was an accomplished seamstress and very good at needlework and quilting. Her favorite flower was the Iris.
Survivors include her husband Wayne Hamar of Long Valley; one son Michael Hamar and his wife Patty of Long Valley; two daughters Darla Weisbeck of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Deb Svasek and her husband Ron of Rapid City; six grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; three brothers Gene Huisman and his wife Louise of Houston, Texas, Gary Huisman and his wife JoAnne of Eugene, Oregon, and Dennis Huisman and his wife Kay of Sioux City, Iowa; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Vivian was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Shirley Green and brother-in-law Ed Green.
Visitation was held 5-7 p.m. Thursday, October 8, at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Long Valley, and one hour preceding the services at the hall on Friday.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday, October 9, at the Old American Legion Hall in Martin, with Pastor Frezil Westerlund officiating.
Interment will be 3:00 p.m. CDT on Friday, at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Valentine, Nebraska.
A memorial is established.
