Vetal Romero, age 91, of Wanblee, died Saturday, December 30, 2006, at the Kadoka Nursing Home.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 2, at the Presbyterian Church in Kadoka, with Pastor Gary McCubbin officiating.
Interment will be at the Romero Family Cemetery near Wanblee.
Vetal Romero was born March 28, 1915, in Wanblee, SD, the son of Manuel and Florence (Hawk) Romero. He grew up around Wanblee and received his education in Genoa, NE. As a young man he did various jobs in the Wanblee area.
Vetal was united in marriage on October 5, 1936, to Nancy Quiver in Kadoka. They made their home on a ranch near Wanblee. In the early 1950's, they moved to Kadoka where he worked as a painter. In the late 1970s, they moved back to the Wanblee area. After his wife's death on June 7, 1983, he continued to reside in the Wanblee area. Due to health reasons, he moved into the Kadoka Nursing Home in mid-December.
Vetal served on the Oglala Sioux Tribal Enrollment Commitee and also served on the Oglala Sioux Parks and Recreation Board. Vetal loved to break and train horses, and enjoyed painting pictures of horses and portraits, also. He was a very likeable person and enjoyed spending time with the grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Survivors include two sons, Al Romero and his wife, Joyce, of Wanblee, and Ferdinand Romero of Wanblee; one daughter, Iris Bearheels and her husband, Leland, of Kadoka; 23 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Sophia Romero of Wanblee; and a host of other relatives and friends.
In addition to his wife, Nancy, Vetal was preceded in death by a grandson, Craig Bearheels; a granddaughter, Jo Ann Romero; a great-granddaughter, Krisene Bearheels; his parents; two sisters, Mable Goes In Center and Susie Romero; and one brother, Theodore Romero.
A memorial is established. Arrangements are with the Rush Funeral Chapel of Kadoka.
