Velma P. Hanson

Velma P. Hanson, age 83, of Philip, died Tuesday evening, May 17, 2005, at the Philip Nursing Home.

Services were held Monday, May 23, at the American Legion Hall in Philip with Pastor Ann Schlossnagle officiating.

Music was provided by Marilyn Millage, pianist, and Elvera Moos, vocalist. Ushers were Corwin “Corky” Thorson and Roy Pfeifer. Pallbearers were Scott, Matthew and Craig Johnson, Mark Hanson, Chad McCoy and Spencer Sudbeck. Honorary pallbearers were Velma’s granddaughter, Carrie McCoy, and Velma’s 11 great-grandchildren.

Interment was at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis. Rush Funeral Home of Philip was in charge of the arrangements.

Velma P. Lorang was born January 20, 1922, in Mt. Vernon, SD, the daughter of Frank and Reta (Cherry) Lorang. She grew up on a farm near Mt. Vernon and attended the Furland and the Hopper Rural Schools prior to graduating in 1940 as salutatorian of the Mt. Vernon High School.

Velma was united in marriage to Hans E. Hanson on June 8, 1941, in Las Vegas, NV. They made their home in Burbank, CA, for five years. During this time, their first child, Sharon, was born. When Hans entered the U.S. Army, Velma and Sharon moved back to Mt. Vernon where they lived with Hans' mother, Lizzie Hanson, until his discharge in 1946.

In 1946, the family moved to Madison, SD, where the son Michael was born. Later, they moved to Mitchell, where Hans operated a Standard Oil Bulk Agency. In October 1950, the family moved to Philip, SD. While in Philip, their third child, Steve, was born in Kadoka.

In 1953, Hans and Velma purchased the Ned Ronning City Meat Market and Locker Plant. In

1960, they built the Hanson's Super Valu Store, which they operated until 1986 when they retired. After their retirement, they continued to make their home in Philip.

Velma was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Philip, and the Women's Auxiliary of the church.

Grateful for having shared her life include her husband, Hans E. Hanson of Philip; a daughter, Sharon Johnson and her husband, Orrin, of Watertown, CT, and their children and spouses, Scott and Lisa Johnson, Matthew and Daphne Johnson, Craig and Rhashell Johnson, and Carrie and Chad McCoy; two sons, Michael Hanson and his wife, Shizuko, of Fairfax, VA, and their son, Mark; and Steve Hanson and his future wife, Paulette Osborne, of Nashville, TN; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Iris Hubbard and her husband, George, of Moses Lake, WA, and Phyllis Thomas and her husband, Lowell, of Chamberlain; a sister-in-law, Jeanette Lorang of Mitchell; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Velma was preceded in death by her parents, and one brother, Elwood Lorang.
