Welcome from Thorson Herefords!
I am sure that I am not the only one who is glad 2013 is gone. What a year – from dry as a bone to a great summer to the most miserable fall that anyone can remember – 2013 threw it all at us. Now we are in 2014 and hopefully this catalog finds you in good health and with an eye toward the future. Cattle prices are good now and look to be good for the future. I have been raising cattle for over 20 years and this is the first time in my life that it feels like the owner of a cow is in the driver’s seat. Fewer numbers and more demand than I ever remember, but the cow is what will drive the car. A few notes for you before you (hopefully) dissect the catalog. It doesn’t seem like I have been doing this for long, but I am about to calve out my 10th crop of registered Herefords. I was the volume buyer at the Shield Bar dispersal sale in February of 2005. I have added on to those cows from various herds, but still haven’t sold registered females. I believe in culling and have done it relentlessly to make sure my cows are the type to help a commercial man survive in today’s world of bigger places and less labor. There are both registered and commercial bulls in this sale. The commercial bulls go back to my dad’s cow herd. Good, honest Hereford cows that paid the way for him to raise six kids. I can’t tell you the pedigree for 10 generations, but I can tell you they are functional and efficient and have been culled hard for any problems for nearly 20 years by me. These bulls have spent their whole life within 7 miles of my house. They were born here and fed here. That last part is why they aren’t feedlot fat. They are in good condition to go to work and last a long time. That is also why yearling weights should be taken with a grain of salt. From March 1 to May, whenever they go to grass, they are in a 5-7 acre lot with cows on one side, heifer calves on one side and the 2’s that I am still feeding on a third. They walk a lot during those couple months, especially if they are feeling their oats. I don’t push them, only feed to reach their potential. I have worked for longevity. I used JC L1 Domino 4013 at 7 and he was still as active and moved as well as a 3-year-old. L1 Domino 99496 was still being used in the pasture at 8 years old. GB L1 Domino 175 was breeding in the pasture as a 10-year-old bull. I have always felt that any ranch is only as profitable as its cowherd. Every bull I have ever bought was with the eye toward what sort of females he would leave. From that, I incorporate as many other traits as possible without losing sight of the goal of top females. Every bull in the sale was planned to be a heifer calf of the best quality that his mother could produce. When they come out bulls, then I sort through them and sell only the ones I would be willing to use on a commercial cow that had to pay my bills. All bulls have been BVD tested and my entire cow herd has been tested for both IE and the grey gene by Dr. Beever and all animals carrying either gene were eliminated. Lastly, I would invite you to buy with confidence. I live here and have no plans on leaving or quitting the business. All bulls are fully guaranteed through the first breeding season. I can winter them for you if you need me to and will deliver the first 100 miles free. If you want to bring your trailer and take them home, I will give you $100 cash for each bull you buy. Thank you very much for your interest and I hope to see you February 11th.
Doug Thorson

I will never be able to pay Ken Coleman back for the ability to use this bull. 99496 is the sire or grandsire of a large part of the greatest Line1 cows today. When you pair him with Ken’s best cow (Dam of Distinction), you get a bull that Ken had no intention of ever letting off his Colorado ranch. His good luck of having more great bulls than he could use right away was my great luck in being able to buy three years’ use of this bull. He has tremendous depth and fleshing ability, but his structure is what really sets him apart. There is no way to capture in a picture him walking across a pasture. His calves have been everything I could have dreamed about, but then it got even better when his daughters calved. They are OUTSTANDING. Deep bodied, easy fleshing, fertile cows with mothering ability second to none. If that doesn’t tell the story, a quote from Ken’s website, “With the set of 847 calves we currently have, we can say, he’s the real deal. 847 throws as much volume and depth of body as any bull we’ve used.” I will flat out say that 847 is the best Hereford bull born in 2008 and maybe in the top handful ever.

I used this bull A.I. He was the best looking bull I have ever seen of any breed. Then when you realize he was a low birth weight bull, it looked even better. His calves didn’t disappoint. He provides the all-around combination of calving ease, growth and maternal that the industry needs. He has been widely used and proven in numerous herds throughout the country and carries stellar EPDs. I liked him so much I bought a son last year.

The first time I toured Gordon Jamison’s ranch in Kansas and saw the 555 daughters, I knew I was going to own a son. I don’t think I could have gotten one out of a better cow. His mother averaged 106% on 7 calves and produced herd bulls for both Colemans and Oleens before this bull. With his length and performance, along with how good his first daughters look, I probably put him with my best cows this year.

I bought this bull without a need for him, but I couldn’t let this guy get away because they don’t come along every year. His sire is the greatest female producer that Mark Cooper has owned and 5 of 7 cows in his close pedigree have earned Dam of Distinction honor. I bought him without a need at the time, but I knew 847 would be going back to Colorado and this bull fit what I wanted to accomplish, which is to have a great cow herd. From the looks of his calves, I didn’t miss and to make things better, his birth weight has proved low enough that I plan on using him on heifers next year.

The second bull I bought from Ken Coleman. When I saw this bull, the only name I could think of was “Yahtzee.” There are very few things this bull doesn’t do well. I have used him just about every way a bull could be used and haven’t found a way for it to be wrong. He has enough performance to use on cows, but I have also used him on heifers and calved them with the cows. His daughters have fantastic udders and his calves seem to have a little extra vigor at birth. He is at the age where I have a lot of his genes in my herd and should find a new home for him, but I don’t think I can possibly afford not to use him as long as he produces.

You can buy this bull, but the chances of his younger brother being for sale is very slim. I think he is my next herd bull.

I AI’d commercial heifers to this bull. I liked them so much that I bought 6001 the next year and used him heavily on my registered cows. He had previously been used at both Oleen’s and Jamison’s with fantastic results. His daughters are as good as any I have seen and moving pairs out last spring, I could pick most of his calves out just by looking at their square butt end.

Another bull from Colemans. I bought this bull because 471 was one of the most heavily muscled Line 1 bulls I have ever seen and I needed him. After I bought the 034 bull, I chose to put 015 with commercial cows his first year. The calves I got out of him made me real excited to use him on registered cows the next year. Unfortunately, he got struck by lightning just before turn-out. A disappointing end, or maybe not the end. This fall, I purchased a sister of his from Ken with the same look and style as 015. Maybe she will raise me a herd bull to do what 015 could have.
