Scotties win at Winner's cross country meet
by Coach Ralph Kroetch
The Philip Scotties first cross country race of 2007 came on a windy 95 degree day, Friday, August 31, on the rolling hills of the Winner golf course.
Eleven Philip athletes started in style placing well in the "A" division meet.
The first race was the girls' junior varsity. Freshman Jennifer Stangle, on her third season, was joined by seventh graders Sam Johnson and Holly Iwan. All three girls ran well, with Iwan placing third of 21 runners and clocking 18:44. Stangle placed 13th in 22:29 and Johnson finished her first race in 26:35 to place 18th. This was a very nice start for these young ladies.
Philip chose to run all five boys in the 4,000 meter junior varsity race. This was a great confidence builder, as they placed first as a team. Individual placings were first spot for freshman Kyle Iwan with a time of 15:54, second place in 16:12 for junior Anthony Iwan, third place to freshman Zane Pekron in 16:31, and seventh place going to eighth grader Kelvin Ferguson in 17:33. The newest Scottie boy, Tyler Dekker, took 21st place from the field of 28 runners. This was a very good start for a very young Scottie team.
Our final race of the day went to our varsity girls, with senior Brandy Bartels and sophomore Emily Schofield placing 11th and 15th in a field of 27 runners. Both girls came on strong in the latter part of the race, showing what summer running and years of dedication can do for an athlete. Bartels covered this 4,000 meter course in 19:36 while Schofield finished her first race of 2007 in 20:07. Congratulations girls.
