Scotties take a first and fourth place at State Wrestling Tournament

Smith boys bring home medals ... Jordan Smith, 119 lbs., fourth place, (son of Ray and Donna Smith) and Lincoln Smith, 189 lbs., first place (son of Kieth and Deb Smith) and the other Philip wrestlers represented the Scotties well at the State Wrestling “B” Tournament. The Smith boys (no relation), Lincoln (189 pounds, first place) and Jordan (119, fourth place), and the other seven Scottie contenders, represented their school and town well at the recent State tournament in Aberdeen.

Philip had nine athletes who competed at the State "B" Wrestling Tournament on Friday and Saturday, February 23 and 24, at the Barnett Center in Aberdeen. As a team, Philip tied for 11th place with a score of 53. Out of 54 participating teams, Parkston won with a team score of 132.5.

Philip has not had a state champion since 1999. Lincoln, at 189 pounds, was the only West River Champion wrestler in the State 'B' tournament.

"It was an awesome weekend," said Deb Smith, mother of Lincoln Smith. "The boys represented Philip really well at State. It can be pretty overwhelming to wrestle in that atmosphere - the electricity is very high and the competition is fierce. Six of our nine got at least one win. We have great coaches and it's been a great season! The Philip wrestling fans - who are all like family to each other - are the best!"

"I am very proud of all our wrestlers," said Donna Smith, mother of Jordan Smith. "They worked very hard this year. Six of our nine state qualifiers were first timers at the state tournament. We are a young team and everyone will be back bigger and better next year."
