Scotties shine at Howard Wood Dakota Relays
The 87th annual Howard Wood Dakota Relays was held in Sioux Falls, May 6 and 7, 2011.
More than 3,000 middle school, high school and college athletes competed. Philip High School was represented by Kaeley Fenhaus, Molly Coyle, Holly Iwan, Josie Guptill and Jeff O'Connell.
In the 4x200 relay, Fenhaus, Coyle, Iwan and Guptill ran a time of 1:52.08 seconds to earn first place.
In the 4x400 relay the girls ran in the order of Fenhaus, Coyle, Iwan and Guptill. They took first place in a time of 4:11.04, again qualifying for state.
In the medley relay, the girls, this time in the order of Coyle, Guptill, Fenhaus and Iwan, ran a state-qualifying time of 4:32.27. They earned seventh place.
Fenhaus earned seventh place in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 50.06. Guptill took 15th in the 100 meter hurdles, with 16.93. Iwan ran the 1600 meter run in a time of 5:37.87 to earn 26th place.
O'Connell earned a second place in the long jump with a distance of 21'4.25." In the triple jump, he went a distance of 44'3.5" to take first place. O'Connell also was honored with the $1,000 Howard Wood Dakota Relays Scholarship.
"It was great experience for our kids and hopefully they will take that experience with them later at the state track meet," said Philip track and field coach Tom Parquet. "It was a great day for the Philip Lady Scotties at Sioux Falls. We qualified our medley relay and 1600 relay teams. The 1600 relay was a new school record and also the first time a Lady Scottie relay has won at Howard Wood. I'm very proud of these young ladies. Jeff O'Connell had another outstanding meet as well, with first place in the triple jump and second place in the ong jump."
