Scotties beat White River 49-14 for homecoming

Blocking was key as Dana Kerns is once again given an open path through the White River Tigers' line. Alex Brech and John Hanes double-team a Tiger.

Exploding into the first quarter, the Scotties still had 11:02 on the clock when John Hart intercepted a pass and ran the ball in for a touchdown. The extra point attempt by Ty Fees was good.

Six minutes later, Dana Kerns passed 25 yards to Brit Miller for another touchdown. The extra point attempt failed. The Tigers fought back with less than a minute on the clock when Clinton Osterbur let loose a 77 yard pass to Travis Krogman for the touchdown. The Tiger extra point attempt failed.

The second quarter belonged to the Scotties. Almost immediately, Austin Bowen caught a 15 yard pass from Kerns for a touchdown. Bo Slovek ran the ball in for the extra points.

The Scottie defense forced the Tiger quarterback to dump a receiver-less pass. Back on offense, the Scotties again scored when Kerns ran five yards to score. Kerns then ran it in for the extra points.

Billy Seager caught a 35 yard pass for yet another Scottie touchdown. Fees’ kick was good for the extra point. The first half ended with the score at 36-6.

In the second half, Kerns bolted through the defense for 65 yards for another six points. Alex Moos made good on the extra-point kick. In the fourth quarter, Nathan O’Dea ran in a five yard touchdown. The kick, though, failed. The Tigers gave one last roar with 2:08 left in the game; Kacktus Bryan passed 15 yards to Michael Glynn for the last touchdown. The attempted extra point run failed.

Philip rushed for 220 yards, compared with White River’s 86. Kerns had seven carries for 139 yards; Miller - 3 carries for 6 yards; Nathan O’Dea - 6 for 16; Fee - 3 for 6; Alex Brech - 2 for 4; Slovek - 2 for 13; Allen Hauk - 1 for 5; Alex Moos - 2 for 17; Zane Fees - 2 for 6; and Brady Grenz had one carry for eight yards.

The Scotties passed for 203 yards, compared with White River’s 178. Seager had five receptions for a total of 48 yards. Miller had two for 80 yards; Ralph Simons - one for 28 yards; Bowen - 1 for 15; O’Dea - 1 for 12; and Ty Fees had one pass reception for 20 yards.

The Scotties intercepted the ball five times. Michael Westerberg stole two passes for a total of 38 yards for the Scotties. Hart had one interception with a six yard return. Slovek intercepted once for a 14 yard return. Miller snagged the ball to give possession to the Scotties.

Miller ran one of the kick-off returns for 21 yards, while O’Dea returned one for 15 yards. Kerns had four kick-offs for a total of 181 yards, and Moos kicked four times for 163 yards total. Simons punted once for 28 yards, and Branden Moos attempted one punt that was hooked. Branden Moos recovered two fumbles, while Miller and Anthony Fenner each recovered one.

The solo-tackle leaders were: Fees with 12, Miller and Andy Schulz with eight each, and Dak Carley with seven.

Head Coach Jerry Rhodes stated, “Overall, I was pleased in the way the young men performed. They came out and set the tone of the game early. We had a couple of miscues in our pass coverage, but were able to make the adjustments and ended up with five interceptions for the game.”

Rhodes continued, “We were able to get everyone in the game to be able to gain some valuable playing-time experience for our younger men.”
