Scottie cross country runner-up in Pierre

by Coach Ralph Kroetch

The Scotties traveled to Pierre to compete on the Hill View Golf Course on Thursday, September 6. With temperatures in the low 70s, no wind and overcast sky, it would prove to be ideal for many Scottie personal bests.

First the girls' junior varsity ran their 4,000 meter course. Philip's three competitors did not qualify as a team in this high powered "A" division race, but our girls all gave great personal efforts. Seventh grader Holly Iwan battled from the start with Todd County's Kyle Marshall for the number one position. Holly's great effort let her finish in a time of 17:59 for second place. Freshman Jennifer Stangle gave a great surge in her last mile and pushed herself past Pierre and Cheyenne Eagle Butte runners to earn 19th place with a time of 21:45. Seventh grader Sam Johnson had pledged to run every step of the race, and she did that, giving her 25th place in a time of 27:51. Great effort girls.

The boys' junior varsity ran next. Anthony Iwan, Zane Pekron, Kelvin Ferguson and Tyler Dekker would all set personal bests in route to a second place team finish. Iwan and Pekron worked together through much of this race to finish third and fourth respectively. Iwan's 15:44 bettered his course best by 38 seconds. Pekron's 15:55 reduced his course best by 56 seconds. Ferguson held a long strong stride throughout the race and bettered his course best by a whopping 6:15 to finish in 17:29 and 17th place. Dekker, in his second 4,000 meter race, dropped 56 seconds to finish in 26th place in a time of 19:21. Great teamwork Scotties.

Philip entered two young ladies in today's field of 46 varsity competitors. Senior Brandy Bartels led for Philip High School today, finishing in 33rd place and a respectable time of 19:11. Sophomore Emily Schofield would find her stride in the second half of this race, pushing past runner from Pierre and Jones County to give herself a personal course best of 20:15. Great effort girls.

Freshman Kyle Iwan was Philip's only varsity boy entry today. K. Iwan ran a strong race to finish in 34th position in this huge field of 45 runners. He battled with Winner's Chris Brokhouse at the race's end to give him a very respectable 20:56 finish time. Way to go Kyle.
