Sadie Conlee Williams

Sadie Conlee Williams, age 97 of Rapid City, formerly of Kadoka, S.D., died Tuesday, November 1, 2011, at Fountain Springs Health Care in Rapid City of congestive heart failure.

Sadie Elsie Williams was born to John and Mary (Kutilek) Washecheck on June 19, 1914, northwest of Kadoka, on the family homestead in Old Stanley County. She was the youngest of 10 children. She received her education at the Lone Star country school. She then helped her parents on the farm until she moved into Kadoka and worked at the Pearl Hotel.

On July 14, 1937, she married Arthur Dale Conlee of Kadoka, in Rapid City. In December 1941, they purchased the Kadoka Telephone Co. Naturally Sadie did not sit idly by during this time. Much of her time was spent at home providing love and care to her children, her husband, and raising food in her garden. She probably had the best green thumb in Kadoka. In the telephone business, it was her job to prepare the bills and run the switchboard. Since she was always close to the telephone switchboard, it was also her job to blow the fire whistle when needed. The fire trucks would stop by the house to find out where the fire was, and naturally everyone also called to find out where the fire was.

With the telephone business in their home, the house was never a quiet place. Sadie spent many hours as an operator at the switch board. Sadie and Arthur had their telephone company for 29 years.

Arthur passed away March 1, 1973. On March 20, 1984, she married Gordon Williams in Pierre. Gordon passed away March 8, 1985.

Sadie was known for her beautiful gardens and flowers. She enjoyed rock hunting, baking, quilting, crocheting for her family, raising beautiful African violets inside her home and raising beautiful flowers and gardens outside her home. She showed kindness and love to her many dogs. Sadie touched the lives of many relatives and friends with her smile and generosity.

Survivors include two daughters, Marjorie Peters (Fredy) of Kadoka and Carolyn Coonrod (Bruce) of Pierre; and son, Bruce Conlee (Virginia) of Rapid City; five grandchildren, Randy Peters, Brent Peters, Brenda Johnson, Charles Conlee and Dale Coonrod; 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Mary Petras of Kadoka; a special friend, Gib Hanna of Arizona; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by husbands Arthur Conlee and Gordon Williams; her parents; three brothers, Frank, Earnest and Earl; six sisters, Mabel O'Connell, Virginia Shaul, Clara Washecheck, Lula Washecheck, Vina Hoffman and Laura Pavlas; grandson Christopher Conlee; and great-granddaughter Amanda Johnson.
