Richard E. Burrus
Richard Edward Burrus was born August 1, 1934, in Ft. Pierre, SD, to Verdie (Anderson) and Edward Burrus of Hayes. He passed away on February 15, 2009, at the age of 74 at the Bellingham, WA, hospital after a brave struggle with lung cancer.
He was raised on a ranch west of Hayes and attended the Hayes School until his parents moved to Bothell, WA, in 1945. While at Hayes, he was quite the little cowboy and continued his love for horses after the move to Bothell, where he earned many awards for his skills and competitions.
He attended Bothell school, then finished his education while in the U.S. Navy. He served his country in the Korean War on the USS Enterprise.
Richard married Barbara Smith in 1966 and moved to Sumas, WA, where they owned a tavern for many years. Richard was also in the trucking business for many years until he retired.
He was active in the American Legion as 1st Vice, 2001-2002, Commander, 2002-2004, and Finance Officer, 2005-2007. He was a great horseman, pool player and was a good dancer. He could build or fix most anything. He loved his family and was very close to his grandsons.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara; a daughter, Verdie (Gary) Holmstrom; grandsons, Collin and Cameron; step-children, Jeff Meyer and his daughter, Kristin; Janice (Barrie) Sen, all from the Ferndale area; also Linda from Port Angeles and her two sons; two sisters, Frances O'Neil of Edmonds, Ursie (Russ) Rogers of Marysville, WA; three nieces and two nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, Red O'Neil.
Richard will be remembered for his giving and caring spirit and we will all miss him.
Interment was at Stillwaters Cremation Cemetery, Ferndale, WA.
