Rex E. Radway

Rex Eugene Radway, age 80, of Philip, died Sunday, February 12, 2006, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.

Visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 15, at the Rush Funeral Home in Philip, and one hour preceding the services at the Legion Hall in Philip on Thursday.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Thursday, February 16, at the American Legion Hall in Philip, with Pastor Mark Ford and Father Ron Garry officiating.

Music will be provided by Marilyn Millage, pianist, Maureen Palecek and Barb Bowen, vocalists. Ushers are Jim Moriarty, George and Charlie Gittings and Steven Stewart. Pallbearers are Glen, Arlie, Cal and Paul Radway, Randy and Ross Collins.

Interment with military honors by the Belle Fourche Honor Guard will be 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

Rex Eugene Radway was born April 18, 1925, on a ranch north of Philip, the son of Carey and Irene (Gittings) Radway. He grew up and received his education at the Hart School, and later Philip High School, graduating in 1943. After graduation he returned to the ranch until entering the United States Army on March 15, 1945. Rex served eighteen months in the Philippine Islands. After his discharge on December 4, 1946, he returned to the ranch.

Rex was united in marriage to Jeanne Ferry on January 10, 1948, in Oldham, SD. After their marriage, they moved to Chicago where Rex worked as a bricklayer for 10 years.

In 1957, Rex and Jeanne moved back to Fred Griffin's ranch north of Philip. They later purchased Rex's father's ranch where they remained until moving into Philip in 1999.

Rex was a member of the United Church in Philip, served as an elder of the Hardingrove Presbyterian Church, was a lifetime member of the VFW Post of Philip, and a member of the Bad River Senior Citizens of Philip.

Rex was devoted to his family and lived for his children and grandchildren.

Grateful for having shared his life include his wife, Jeanne of Philip; three sons, Tom Radway and his wife, Marie, of Philip, Todd Radway and his wife, Traci, of Philip, and Mark Radway and his wife, Judith, of Philip; two daughters, Sandra Rathbun of Orlando, FL, and Stacy Dole and her husband, Gary, of Black Hawk; 12 grandchildren: Nicole (Paul) Dickinson, Melissa Rathbun, Marcy (William) Morrison, Mindy Radway, Cain Radway, Alex Radway, Lori (John) McElfresh, Kelly Bauman, Stephanie Bauman, Cody Bauman, Tanner Radway and Bailey Radway; 10 great-grandchildren: Taylor, Quinn, Logan, Regan, and Lexie McElfresh, Bradly Rathbun, Payton Schoenhals, Jack Preston Dickinson, and T.J. and Spencer Morrison; a sister, Bonnie Collins of Rapid City; two sisters-in-law, Mildred Radway of Philip, and Marian Radway of Louisville, KY; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Rex was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy Carlson; his parents; and two brothers, Raymond and Robert Radway.
