The wind and competition could not stop the Philip Scottie team from adding to its list of state qualifying members.

The Region 7B Track and Field Meet, held in Kadoka on Thursday, May 17, had eight schools represented. The Philip girls' team earned second place with 118 points, behind the first place Kadoka team. The boys' team soundly took first place with 163 points, with Kadoka trailing behind with 112.

"Overall it was a fantastic day," said head coach Jerry Rhodes. "We won the boys 7B region and were runner-up with the girls. Both teams scored a lot of points and I stress team. Everyone contributed. We picked up points where we didn't think we would. Overall, the kids performed extremely well."

At regions, the top two athletes in each event qualify to compete at the state meet. Plus anyone who would qualify by standards earn a berth at state. In the preliminaries, Nathan O'Dea ran the 100 meter dash in 11.36 seconds.

During the season, athletes can qualify for state by meeting or surpassing a previously set time or distance in a given event.

Scottie state track and field qualifiers are Nathan O'Dea (100 meter dash, 4x100 meter relay and long jump), Jeff O'Connell (triple jump), Casey Elshere (110 meter hurdles and discus throw), Alex Moos (shot put and discus throw), Casey Cuny (100 meter dash and 4x100 meter relay), Jake Mathews (4x100 meter relay), Dexter Livermont (4x100 meter relay), Lindsay Mann (400 meter dash), Tylissa Fitch (1600 meter run, 800 meter run, and 4x400 meter relay), Kayla O'Connell (300 meter hurdles and 4x400 meter relay), Marissa Mann (shot put), Lindsay Mann (400 meter dash, 4x400 meter relay, 1600 Medley relay) and Josie Guptill (4x400 meter relay, 1600 medley relay), Molly Coyle (1600 medley relay), Elizabeth Lawson (1600 medley relay).
