Ralph "Bud" Hedman

Ralph "Bud" Hedman, 89, of Pierre, passed away Friday, January 28, 2011, at Avera McKennan Healthcare Center in Sioux Falls.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 1, at Lutheran Memorial Church with interment following at Riverside Cemetery.

Ellis Ralph "Bud" Hedman was born on April 24, 1921, to Cora Olivia (Anderson) and Ellis Elias Abraham Hedman at Hayes, S.D. He grew up on the farm at Hayes, attending grade school at Hayes and enjoying community activities with family, friends and neighbors.

Bud graduated from Pierre High School in 1939 and continued working on the family farm/ranch with his parents. Bud was both baptized and confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church in Hayes and was a lifelong member. He was active on the Grace Lutheran governing board, the Hayes school board and Hayes Hall board.

On June 17, 1945, Bud was united in marriage to Mary Dena Briggs at Hayes, S.D. Bud and Mary were the first couple married at Grace Lutheran Church. They were partners in every part of their life together from working on the farm/ranch and purchasing land in Haakon County to cutting a swath across the dance floor. Bud and Mary attended every production of the Hayes play, marking 40 years of attendance in 1993. Together they raised two sons and five daughters, who provided them with a houseful of grandchildren. Bud particularly loved holding the babies, telling them stories and reading the children books. He was very proud of each one of his family, believing they could accomplish anything they set their mind to.

Bud loved his family, friends, farming and ranching, dancing, playing cards and telling stories. Although they spent most of their time in Pierre in the last few years, he loved being in the country for harvest and anytime the weather would cooperate. He continued farming "by phone" whenever the weather kept him in town. Bud was a storyteller and provided a rich verbal history to his offspring so that they "knew" people they had never met. He loved nothing better than a good joke and was always on the lookout for new material.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Mary; children, Dena Kinsella, Renee (Steve) Wegener, Roxanne Hedman, Kirby (Karla) Hedman, Karla Hedman and Yvette (Alan) Thomas; sister, Isabelle Stapf Elliott Jacobsen; sister-in-law, Lillian Briggs; and over 65 (and counting) grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Cora and Ellis Hedman; his son, Roger; grandsons, Zachariah and Jesse; brothers-in-law, Roland Stapf, William Elliott, Edmund Jacobsen, Kirby Briggs, Keith Briggs, Roy Stoeser; and sister-in-law, Wauneta Stoeser.

Memorials may be directed to Grace Lutheran Church.
