Philip wranglers compete in High School Regional Rodeo

Toyeala Fortune - breakaway roping state qualifier

One of the two High School Regional Rodeos in West River was held in Wall on Friday through Sunday, June 2-4. Individual results of the regional rodeo consist of the Saturday, Sunday and average scores.

Contestants and teams earn points at the regionals by placing in the first through tenth positions. Total points earned during the regional rodeos qualify individual contestants for the State High School Rodeo to be held June 21-25 at Belle Fourche. The top four cowboys and cowgirls with the highest total points from the two regionals and the state rodeo will qualify for the National High School Rodeo on July 23-30 in Springfield, Illinois.

There are eight cowboys and cowgirls participating from the Philip area. They are Ryan Kammerer, Kaylee Nelson, Stephanie O’Connell, Katie Nelson, Blayne Kennedy, Marla Kelley, Toyeala Fortune and Loni Nelson. Advisor for the team is Doug Hauk.

There are 12 rodeo events in high school rodeo, saddle bronc riding, bare back riding, break-away roping, barrel racing, steer wrestling, tie-down roping, team roping, boys’ cattle cutting, girls’ cattle cutting, pole bending, bull riding and the rodeo queen contest.

The second West River High School Regional Rodeo will be in Sturgis, June 9-11.

Participants who placed in the top 10 in an event are qualifiers in that event for the state rodeo.
