Philip tops 4-Corners at home; loses by 10 on the road

A lot of "umph" went into this hit, which looked good for Michael Penticoff of 4-Corners, but it went foul just before the left field post, robbing him of a homerun. Penticoff plays center field for the 4-Corners men's amateur team. They lost to Philip Thursday, but 10-runned them on Sunday.

The Philip Amateur baseball team came up big, holding off a late inning rally, against 4-Corners, June 16, in Philip.

Philip scored early in what looked to be a big and quick win. Seven runs scored on five hits and one error in the second inning. Getting hits that inning were Chad Ramsey, Brad Heltzel, Jeremy Kerns, Jody Sudbeck, and Joel Spry. Dusty Snyder reached base on an error, Trace O’Connell was hit by a pitch and Matt Reckling walked.

Both teams were hurt by walks in the game, with half of the runners that were walked on both teams coming in to score later in the inning. Both teams tried to keep a fresh throwing arm on the mound during the four hour-long game. Philip had a total of four pitchers: Dusty Snyder, Heltzel, Matt Griffin, and JR Snyder. Mike and Brad Hand came in for relief of 4-Corners’ starter, Justin Thompson.

Philip continued hitting well in the third and fourth innings, scoring nine more runs on eight hits and two errors. After Philip's scoring slowed down, 4-Corners came back with some runs of their own in the fifth and sixth innings. They scored 12 runs on a total of eight hits. Brad Hand batted in four of those runs on a grand slam homerun in the sixth. He had another homerun in the ninth, bringing in three runs.

While the RBIs were concentrated on Hand and Tanner Norman for 4-Corners, they were evenly spread out for Philip. Seven of the 11 players that batted drove in runs. Spry was the big hitter for Philip with five RBIs on five hits. He also came in to score three times.

The teams faced off again at 4-Corners, Sat., June 19. This time 4-Corners got the win. They also beat Plankinton in an earlier game. Both wins came via the 10-run rule, making it a shorter day in the hot sun.

Philip continues its schedule with games against Clearfield at Philip, Friday, June 24, and Burke at Philip the next day. Start times for the games are 8:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., respectively.
