by Coach Ralph Kroetch
The Philip cross country team added the Rapid City Central and Rapid City Stevens AA-A-B Invitational to their schedule this year because the Elks Golf Course is the sight of the 2009 State Champonship.
The competition was extremely tough on Saturday, September 26, as schools from South Dakota, North Dakota and Wyoming gathered to enter 452 runners, 33 teams, in the high school divisions. There were also 10 middle school teams.
Philip's Holly Iwan and Emily Schofield ran in the girls' varsity run, along with 128 others. The best South Dakota team, AA Rapid City Stevens, finished fourth, while the highest ranking B team was Lemmon in seventh place. Iwan finished the race in a time of 16:55, placing 44th overall and fifth among the B school runners. Schofield finished in 20:35 to place 12th among the B school runners.
Philip's Zane Pekron and William Coyle entered the varsity boys' race, with 116 others. The highest ranking South Dakota school, Pierre, placed fourth. With a manditory five runners per team, no B schools entered full teams. Coyle finished 78th overall and sixth among B school runners with a time of 18:26. Pekron ended his race in 18:45 to place seventh among the B runners.
Of the 97 runners in the girls' junior varsity run, were Philip's Kaeley Fenhaus, Jennifer Stangle and Allison Pekron. Among the B school runners, Fenhaus placed fifth with a time of 21:31, Pekron finished sixth in a time of 22:29 and Stangle finished seventh in 23:30.
Philip's Tyler Dekker and Marcus Martinez joined 105 other boys in the junior varsity run, today also 5,000 meters, the same as the varsity course. Dekker placed 43rd overall and first among the B school runners, with a time of 19:49. Martinez ran a time of 21:21 to place 76th overall and third among the B school runners.
This meet was great for the Philip athletes, as they can bring this experience to the 2009 State competition October 24. The Scotties competed in Lead on Tuesday, September 29. Their next meet is at 10:00 a.m. in Highmore on Saturday, October 3.
