Philip loses drivers license service

Beginning October 1, 2009, driver licensing services will no longer be available in Philip.

The move is part of a statewide restructuring effort to allow the South Dakota Driver Licensing Program to better use existing resources to meet service demands. The restructure reallocates resources to locations with a higher traffic volume. The driver licensing station in Philip accounts for less than .1 percent of IDs and licenses issued statewide.

People in the Philip area are encouraged to visit the Jackson County Register of Deeds Office in Kadoka for driver licensing services. The Kadoka exam station is located in the Register of Deeds Office in the Jackson County Courthouse, 1 Main Street. Licenses are issued Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to noon and 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The public is also reminded that standard driver licenses are valid for five years. Standard driver licenses can be renewed up to 180 days before their expiration. If a person's license expiration is within this renewal period, they may want to consider renewing prior to the closing date. Fifty-six licensing locations remain open across the state and drivers can apply for a new license or ID card, or renew a license or ID card, at any of those locations.

People renewing their driver license need to provide their current license. Those applying for a new license need to provide a certified birth certificate and a social security card. For a listing of alternative documents, call 1-800-952.3696 or visit the website of www.state.sd.us/dps/dl. New licenses and renewals both require a vision test.
