Philip Elementary Playground ... Be a Part of the Dream!
The Haakon Education Association (HEA), in conjunction with the Philip Alumni Association, is sponsoring a campaign titled "Philip Elementary Playground ... Be a Part of the Dream!"
"Our goal is to obtain new equipment for the elementary playground," said Jessica Wheeler, second grade instructor at Philip Elementary. "The school board has stated that if we can purchase the equipment, they will provide the required safety ground cover and the installation of the equipment. That is quite a large chunk of the project; about half.
The pieces of playground equipment being looked at range in price from around $225 for the four foot Junior Basketball Hoop up to about $13,000 for the large play system. These prices do not include shipping. A webpage has been created that displays a picture of each piece of equipment and the prices. The website can be accessed by going to either www.philip.k12.sd.us/jwheeler or www.philip.k12.sd.us (the school's home page).
The HEA and Philip Alumni Association plan to place project brochures in each of the registration packets at the all school reunion scheduled during the Philip Centennial Celebration in June. A booth will also be set up by the reunion registration area. The group's plan is for individuals, classes or "decades" of classes to purchase a piece of equipment and donate it to the playground.
HEA will place plaques on each of the donated pieces thanking the organization that purchased it. "We are looking for business owners, patrons or anyone to either make a donation toward the project or directly sponsor a piece of equipment," stated Wheeler.
