Philip decimates Jones County 53-0
The Scotties won their first home game of the season on Friday, September 1, with a score of 53-0. A minute and three seconds remained on the clock.
The new mercy rule was implemented in Philip's first game of the season game by the Scotties against the Jones County Coyotes. A new ruling is the continuous running of the clock in the second half.
According to the South Dakota High School Athletic Association, the mercy rule is "when a team secures a 35 point lead in the second half, the clock will continue to run except for time-outs (team or official) and after a score. If the point margin falls below 35 points, regulation timing resumes. If a team is 50 points or more ahead at the end of the first half or if it secures such a lead during the second half, the game is ended immediately. Regulation timing is followed in the first half regardless of the score."
Philip led 16-0 after the quarter, and led 41-0 at halftime. They added six points in third quarter. With most of the fourth quarter used up, the Scotties scored again to close down the game by virtue of the 50-point mercy rule.
