Philip cross country team at Lead meet

Wind and elevation added to the challenge of this 4,000 meter girls' varsity coarse, which travels around the base of a small mountain. Spectators can see only the first and last half miles of the course. The first quarter mile goes uphill, separating the leaders from the main pack early on. Emily Schofield and Brandy Bartels worked together to attack the hill and lead their Scotties. Jennifer Stangle and Katie Coyle worked hard to keep their teammates in sight as the pack of runners disappeared behind the mountain.

As they returned, Bartels again lead the Scotties team. She finished in 15th place, clocking 19:23 and bettering her 2005 course time by 52 seconds. Schofield finished 18th in a time of 19:41, and also bettered her course best by 25 seconds. Stangle took the 21st position, finishing in 21:17. Coyle placed 26th with a time of 22:09. These finishes gave the girls fifth place as a team.

The Philip boys' varsity had four competitors that day, as seventh grader Kelvin Ferguson would run his first varsity race. He joined Kyle Iwan, Zane Pekron and Anthony Iwan - a very young varsity team.

Returning to the sight of the spectators on the 5,000 meter course, Anthony lead his team and earned a 16th place in 20:58, bettering his course best by over a full minute. Kyle finished just one place and ten seconds back for 17th and a time of 21:08. Pekron, running this course for his first time, placed 21st in a respectable 22:29. Ferguson placed 31st in 30:52.
