Philip Chapter FCCLA competes at District IX

The Philip Chapter of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America attended the District IX FCCLA meeting on February 27th at the School of Mines and Technology in Rapid City.

Towns in District IX include Philip, Belle Fourche, Bison, Sturgis and Wall. The conference gave members the opportunity to compete in STAR events and develop leadership.

Skye Brucklacher, a Philip High School senior, has served as the district chairman for the past year and is also a state officer through having this position. She presided over the 2008 district meeting in Rapid.

Philip had six girls competing in illustrated talks, trying to earn a spot to compete at the state level at the end of April. Illustrated talk participants from Philip FCCLA were Bethany Kroetch, Molly Coyle, Jennifer Stangle, Abby Carley, Emma Slovek and Colby Smith. Smith, a PHS sophomore, received a superior rating on her talk. She was the only Philip presenter from districts who will be going on to the state convention in Sioux Falls.

Other Philip members participating at the meeting were Tara Ravellette (voting delegate), Grace Schnabel (peer educator), Loni Nelson, Sierra Hook, Kenzy Pinney, Cassie Schofield, Jordan Smith, Andrew Brech, Abby Fitzgerald, Kayla O'Connell and Callie Schofield.

Philip FCCLA advisor Brigitte Brucklacher took 18 members to the district meeting this year. Along with Donna Smith, who was a judge for the event, and Deb Smith who was along as a parent and photographer. All the members who were not presenting talks had jobs to do to help during the day, as room workers, timers and other responsibilities.
