Philip bedevils New Underwood 48-45
The Philip boys basketball team traveled to New Underwood on Tuesday, February 9, to challenge the Tigers.
In a come back effort, the Scotties gained a tight victory, keeping the audience members on the edge of their seats until the last minutes of the game. The final score was 48-45.
"It's always tough to go on the road and get a win," said head coach Mike Baer. "It doesn't help when you don't shoot well. But a win is a win, and this one was big. With two wins over New underwood and ten wins, it will be hard for us to loose the number two seed in district. That ensures us of a home game."
"Jeff O'Connell really stepped up in the second half to help us overcome poor shooting. Casey Cvach led a defense that for the best part of the game shot down New Underwood's best players," said Baer.
In the low-scoring match, Philip got through the first quarter with only five points, but kept New Underwood down to only eight. Both teams put more points on the scoreboard in the second quarter, but the Scotties were still down 16-21 at half-time.
The third quarter saw a slight rally, in which Philip closed the gap to a 28-30 score. The final quarter turned out to be the highest scoring one of the game. Philip players gained five more points than the New Underwood players, reaching the final buzzer with a game winning three point lead.
