Pleasant Ridge School
A picture of the Pleasant Ridge School taken in 1971.
The Pleasant Ridge School sat a half-mile from the Creighton Community Hall was a normal country school. Lorna Hoffman Moore attended school there with her siblings, Floyd, Maurice, Betty, Colleen and Ray. The Hoffman children lived one-quarter of a mile from the school and walked to school. Lorna recalls that Lil Shull, Mrs. Flatt, and Kathleen Shull were a few of her teachers. Mary Jo Mason who taught in the late 1940’s, taught the girls to tap dance. Lorna remembers the heating stove used coal and all the country schools would get together at the Creighton hall at Christmas time and put on a program. Karel Eisenbraun Reiman began her first teaching job there in 1959. She recalled it was nice, but had no running water or indoor bathrooms, which was typical of country schools. Heat came from an oil stove. The stove would periodically belch soot everywhere and all over everything Karel said, “The parents of students would have to come to school. Mothers would scrub and polish while the fathers tried to figure out what caused the mess.” Karel and her pupils would wipe off desks and books and all would go well until the next “belch”. The school would remain squeaky clean until the next episode. The school had a piano Karel recounted it was out-of-tune but she felt lucky to just have one. As she would pound away on the piano, her pupils sang from the green On Wings of Song music book and by Christmas they were actually singing on tune. Now every country school teacher has to endure a little wildlife problem in the country but when a piano starts emitting squeaky sounds every so often and there isn’t anybody singing it usually indicates a nest full of baby mice. Now, Karel was deathly afraid of mice and deciding that she didn’t want her pupils to know of this she would quietly appoint one of the older boys to dispose of them. Well wouldn’t you know it the word spread of her fright and one night some of the local pranksters from the community crept into the schoolhouse and left a live mouse under her school bell. As is customary in country schools a school bell is rang to begin the school day and used at recess time and noon. As Karel began to ring the bell the next morning, there was a dizzy mouse ....... and once again one of the older boys was sent to dispose of the rodent. Karel had a hunch that one little boy went home to tell his folks and older brother all about the teacher’s screeches. Karel still smiles about that little incident to this day. Remember when I said that country schoolteachers had to deal with wildlife problems. Besides mice they had to deal with rattlesnakes and skunks and an occasional mad dog, which is one of the scariest incidents that Karel had at the Pleasant Ridge School. The teacher and students were inside the school house when they heard the frenzied howling of a dog trying to get inside the school. They were certain the dog had rabies! Rodney Hoffman, the oldest male student looked out the window and recognized the dog as belonging to his great uncle, Bev Graham, a hunter and trapper in the area. Karel said, “She was so thankful to have a telephone to call for help.” A vehicle soon drove up to the school and the teacher and students heard a gunshot and then silence. Graham sadly explained to them that his hunting dog had gotten into some poison and in agony headed for the Pleasant Ridge School. Karel taught at the school for three years and feels very fortunate to have taught such hard working students, who had caring and helpful parents. Students that she taught were Rodney, J. Ben, Christy, Dawn and Kathy Hoffman, George Hoffman, Don and Lonna McDowell, Jeanette Schuler, Randy and Bradley Babcock, Pete Huether and Phyllis Eisenbraun. Whenever Karel meets one of her former pupils, she always tells them they were her favorite pupil and truly means it.

The teacher who preceded Karel was a man who has become a well know area author, Paul Hennessey. He has written a number of nonfiction western books and lives in Western South Dakota. Delores Peters taught from 1962 – 1964. Delores recalls it was a cold school and she and the students would climb on the piano to keep warm. Students were: Hoffmans, a Huether, Janet Schuler and the Babcock kids. In 1962, she taught the little Eisenbraun girls. A missile base was built close to the school. Delores said, “They were made aware if the missile should ever blast off the lid would probably land in the schoolyard.” She also remembers Viola Schuler calling the school to inform her that JFK had been assassinated. The school would hold a pie social in the fall, open house in the spring to show off their school projects and the annual Christmas program. Iva Eisenbruan taught from 1969 – 1973. Students were: first grader Robert Meyer, second grader Barbara Hoffman, third grader Boe Knapp, fifth grader Linda Meyer, sixth graders Vicky Knapp and Darlene Pascoe, seventh grader Beverly Hoffman and eighth graders Bradley Babcock, Linda Drewitz, Kathryn Hoffman and Thomas Shull in 1969 - 1970. Students from 1972 – 1973 were: Kindergarten Juston Eisenbraun, first grader Jim Eisenbraun, second graders James Babcock and Mike Shull, fourth grade Robert Meyer and Roger Shull, sixth graders John McGriff (half a term), Mary and Tim Shull and Boe Knapp, seventh grade Kerri Meyer and Wayne Shull. Iva said, “After they closed the building it was vandalized. The Wall School District opened a small school trailer and later bought a bigger trailer to use for a schoolhouse when enough children in the area were old enough to begin school. Thank you to Karel Eisenbraun Reiman, Lorna Moore, Delores Peters and Iva Eisenbraun for donating pictures and information on the Pleasant Ridge School.
BNP completes land purchase of 160 acres in Conata Basin
Badlands National Park has completed the purchase of 160 acres of private land located in Conata Basin. The property had been purchased by the Nature Conservancy in 2008 as part of a larger ranch that contained land both inside and outside the park. The 160 acres inside the park was held by The Nature Conservancy while the NPS worked through the administrative and financial challenges commonly associated with this type of purchase. “Despite common perceptions to the contrary, acquiring land – even land already inside the park boundary – is not as easy and doesn’t go as fast as many might think,” explained Deputy Superintendent Steve Thede. The Conservancy concluded that part of its land should be owned by the park, as had been planned when the park was created, and took the steps necessary to facilitate the process. The Conservancy’s ownership also enabled the property and several hundred additional acres of Badlands National Park to benefit from a prescribed burn for the first time since the park was established. The land is located in Conata Basin within the Badlands Wilderness Area and will be managed as wilderness. It will benefit wildlife and make a remote area of the park more accessible to visitors. “Acquiring this land will allow hikers into a part of the park where we didn’t really encourage visitors to go before, because access was difficult without crossing onto private property,” said Brian Kenner, Chief of Science and Natural Resources at Badlands National Park. “We can now take down a fence and open that area up for public access. There’s a picnic area and a trailhead nearby.” Other benefits include access for the park’s bison herd with additional places to find water and graze and easier control of wildfire and prescribed burns which benefit native plants and wildlife and help rejuvenate the prairies. “It made a lot of sense for the National Park Service to own and manage this property since it lies within the existing boundary of the Park,” said Bob Paulson, Western Dakotas Program Director for The Nature Conservancy. “We own land nearby and we use conservation grazing to ensure that it remains healthy and diverse,” Paulson said. “Badlands National Park is a good neighbor and we know that the National Park Service will be an excellent steward of this property.” The Conservancy works with landowners, partners, the US Forest Service and the National Park Service to conserve Conata Basin, a 142,000-acre landscape located south of Badlands National Park and considered one of North America’s largest and most intact grasslands. Together, Badlands National Park and the Conata Basin is home to relatively large numbers of black-footed ferrets, one of the rarest mammals on the continent, as well as bison, bighorn sheep, swift fox, prairie dogs and burrowing owls. “Badlands National Park just got bigger and better and Conata Basin remains an incredible place for both people and wildlife,” Paulson said.
Legislative leaders predictably still at odds over education bill
By Elizabeth “Sam” Grosz Community News Service Heading into the final week of the 2012 South Dakota Legislature, leaders of both parties still are at odds over the bill that seeks to reward the state’s best teachers and attract more in certain areas of study. The plan, which started as Gov. Dennis Daugaard’s plan, but has suffered at last count 23 amendments to make it more palatable to educators and the public, is embodied in HB1234. Republican House and Senate leaders said Friday at their weekly news conference that the education plan has gained the most media attention of any of the bills. But now, said Sen. Russ Olson, R-Madison, “I think we have the people’s plan.” With the current version, Olson said, “we are allowing local school districts to have continuing contracts,” and have expanded the local control option for school boards that want to give more money for such things as a teacher who acts as a mentor. Olson said as long as it is advancing student achievement, “we want to reward teachers.” The bill was approved in the Senate Education committee and now is expected in the full Senate, perhaps on Tuesday. However, Democratic Senate leader Jason Frerichs, D-Wilmot, said what happened in the Education Committee was “something to witness first hand,” which he did. He said the bureaucrats were testifying for the bill, continuing to push that top-down approach, while the foot soldiers, administrators, school board members, teachers and parents were saying “hold on, let’s do it right.” Frerichs said it looks like the Governor means well, but he is really “pushing this forward at any cost.” House Democratic Leader Bernie Hunhoff, Yankton, said the plan’s $15 million cost has inaccurately been called the “biggest investment in history for education.” However, he said, that amount is just one-fifth of what was cut last year from school funding. Numerous Republican legislators also have voiced their displeasure with the bill, even with its amendments and are asking that money be put back into the state’s school funding formula to benefit local school districts and the taxpayers who support them. As legislators head into their (continued on page 2)

The Wall Junior class won the coveted FFA Ag Olympic trophy on Thursday, February 23. Four- person teams had to hurry and put on western clothing over their own clothing, compete in a gunny sack race, endure an endurance race and finish with a gummy worm pie eating contest. Emilee Pauley is the Wall Middle School student of the month for February 2012. Emilee is in the sixth grade and is a great student. She is very responsible and treats others with respect. She gets her work done on time and works hard to understand content so that she can apply it to future learning. Emilee participates in basketball and rodeo. She enjoys riding horse in her free time. Emilee is the daughter of Kelly Jo “Bunny” Bail and Bud Pauley. Kent Jordan from First Interstate Bank presented Emilee with a First Interstate Bank sweatshirt and bag. Cousins play in different basketball championship games on same night
Three of Norma Pellegrin's granddaughters played in district championship BB games on the same night at different locations. Carlee Johnston with the Wall Eagles, Tia Grabow with the Hill City Rangers and Shania Johnston with Faith Longhorns. Tia's team played Red Cloud and suffered a loss. Carlee's team played Edgemont and also lost. Shania's team won their game and will advance to the regionals at Wakpala on Tuesday night. Carlee is the daughter of Sam and Cary Johnston of Elm Springs. Shania is the daughter of Rick Johnston of Union Center and Tia is the daughter of Tessa and Todd Grabow, and granddaughter of Cheryl and Terry Hammerstrom of Hereford Needless to say, the family is mighty proud of these girls.
Small choices – BIG impact!
By Elke Baxter We do it a hundred times a day. We make choices; big ones and small ones. Since we're busy people, we rarely stop to think those choices through to their conclusion. Each choice however can have a big impact. If we're inclined to think that “little old me” can't make a difference, I would remind you of Alexander Graham Bell, Henry Ford, The Wright Brothers and other historical figures. “Big deal” you say? You're right. Your first choice of the day is served with your morning coffee. Would you be surprised to learn that your decisions have world wide results? Most of us have no idea that our coffee purchases make a difference to the birds in our gardens. That little choice comes down to buying shade grown vs. sun grown coffee. Shade grown coffee helps our feathered friends preserve their Latin American wintering habitat while providing above average wages and cleaner water for local farmers. Search SHADE GROWN COFFEE online for more info. For examples closer to home, let's looks at local shops, grocers, and farmers markets. The simple choice of shopping at your local shops versus the big box stores keeps your community alive. To your local grocer your choice is a big deal indeed. His family gets to eat another day. Supporting that local farmers market is also significant. Perhaps you just want to shop there, but maybe your job could be to help supply it with your own garden fresh produce. Don't have a farmers market yet? Make a choice to start one! How about the choices right in your own yard? The choice to replace a few flowers in your garden beds with veggies helps you save some more money, let's you harvest your own food and teaches the kids about food. They really do need to know that milk doesn't grow in cartons. If you take this tiny little choice another step further and multiply the same action by say a mere five percent of our world population, which comes out to a whopping 35 million people, you begin to see how it saves tons of oil by keeping trucks from having to haul in YOUR lettuce or radishes. Furthermore it saves on water since we're now growing food instead of ornamentals, reduces chemicals and keeps the air cleaner. Perhaps that tired old lawn could find new life supporting your community. Be sure to read about 'LASAGNA GARDENING” in an upcoming article for a simple way to transform any area into a new garden. If you're in a hurry, read the book of the same title by Patricia Lanza. Staying right in your yard, you can make many more consequential choices. If you choose to include some milkweeds, goldenrod or cosmos with your flowers, your little corner of the world can be host to a beautiful family of Monarch butterflies. Choosing to read labels thoroughly can make the difference between controlling pests or killing all the good bugs in your yard. The perhaps difficult choice to wait with planting your potatoes until the beginning of July will help you miss the potato beetles altogether and you won't need to deal with more toxins in your food supply. Choosing to use compost in your garden beds, on walks and in between rows (available in bulk at larger local landfills) helps to conserve water, suppress weeds and keeps more chemicals out of your environment. As a bonus it saves you money and work. Eleanor Roosevelt said it best: “One's philosophy is not best expressed in words; it is expressed in the choices one makes.” The choices truly never end - make yours count today!

From the desk of Superintendent Dennis Rieckman
We are quickly moving to the end of another legislative session and there has been some controversial items concerning education. HB 1234 is a bill that will change education for a long time. It will affect the way schools operate, evaluate teachers, and pay teachers all in the name of student achievement. Is this bill necessary? I personally do not think so. Most of the schools in South Dakota do an excellent job in preparing our students. I feel this legislation is moving too fast and changes are being made without thinking through them. At the local cracker barrel with our area legislators it was mentioned it takes two - three years to pass good legislation and they were talking about prairie dogs. Why can’t the process regarding HB 1234 be slowed down? A study group made up of stakeholders to develop good legislation and keep the public informed of what is being discussed would be beneficial. We heard about this plan in January – why the rush? I want to focus on the Power House and the student/community use of the facility. First of all the community of Wall is very lucky to have a fitness facility of this caliber. Student and school use is still the priority of the Power House and scheduling of activities etc. It is everyone’s responsibility to help keep the Power House a quality facility. If you use the weights – rerack them, wipe the seats down when finished with it, pick up your trash, turn off machines when finished, and keep the music in good taste. It is the little things that will keep our facility a great place to go to work out. We also need to have all users to sign in each time they use the Power House. It helps justify the hours we are open and helps us to look at additional times it could be open. Students are not allowed in the Power House without adult supervision. As adult card holders you are responsible to make sure your card is being used properly. Your son or daughter cannot use the card without one of the parents being present. I can’t stress this enough – if the student is caught in the Power House without supervision we will check to see how they gained access and if the card was used improperly it will be cancelled. I am not trying to make things difficult, but it comes down to liability issues and if something gets damaged – nobody seems to remember what happened. So it is important we follow the rules and guidelines outlined for using the Power House. First and foremost the Power House is a school facility and the school board has allowed community members to use the facility. There needs to be an effort on the part of students and community members to use the facility in a proper and respectful manner. If as a community member you do not like a lot of noise or activity when working out I suggest you use the facility when students are less likely to be in the Power House. The winter activity season is coming to a close and the students and coaches will be gearing up for track, golf and rodeo. The track team will be using the track located at the football field for practice. The surface has been reworked and hopefully will provide a safer area for our athletes to run and practice.
Longhorns win in Wall
By Coach Delger It was an uphill battle all night long for the Eagle boys as they hosted the Faith Longhorns on Friday, February 24. Faith was to intimidating for the Eagles, and it showed in their confidence when shooting the ball. The Eagles shot less than 20 percent, making only 10 shots from the field the entire night. Defensively, Wall did a good job, but it couldn’t make up for the struggles on offense. For the Longhorns, Jade Keffeler led with 19 points, followed by Jhett Williams with 13; Kolbi Selby had 14 rebounds. Leading the Eagles was Chavis Shull with 12 points and three steals. Tyler Peterson had six rebounds against the Longhorns. Wall was without Laketon McLaughlin in this game, who suf` fered an ankle injury in practice the previous night. The Eagles were defeated 25-65, enduring their 11th loss of the season. Regardless of this loss, the Eagle boys still have a chance of securing a second seed in the district.
