Olive "Ollie" Collins

Olive "Ollie" Collins (The Tax Lady) 91 of Guadalupita, NM, formerly of Faith, SD, passed away Wednesday, August 23, 2006, at her home.

Service were held Tuesday, August 29, at the Faith Community Center in Faith with Rev. Wayne Olson officiating.

Interment was at the Collins Family Ranch Cemetery near Faith.

Ollie Collins was born March 15, 1915, at Pierre to Byron and Elsie (Staben) Sabey. She attended Pierre Elementary and High School and graduated with honors, despite the fact that she was declared blind for six months her senior year. She worked for several years as a bookkeeper for various businesses in Pierre and as a receptionist at the radio station.

She married Ralph Collins August 22, 1938, at the Onida Lutheran Church. Ollie assisted Ralph, who lost an arm in 1939, with ranch chores in the sheep ranching operation south of Faith. In January 1939, she began doing income tax preparation for a living on the ranch. Ollie's customers came to Faith from all over the country to get her tax preparation services. Ralph helped her with the Internal Revenue law research. She considers this duo husband-wife team to be the greatest part of their formula for a happy marriage … working together. For over 40 years she prepared income tax for patrons in the area. For many years she was an art and craft instructor for the Muscular Dystrophy Camps in South Dakota and Nebraska. Governor George Mickelson declared March 13, 1987, Ollie Collins Day in South Dakota to celebrate her 72nd birthday.

Ollie was a member of the Faith Senior Citizen Center and was an active member of her beloved community. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
