Norman E. Bierwagen

Norman E. Bierwagen, 87, of Pierre, S.D., passed away, Tuesday, November 23, 2010, at Good Samaritan Center Nursing Care Facility in Sioux Falls.

Services were held Tuesday, November 30, at Faith Lutheran Church in Pierre, followed by interment at the Masonic Cemetery in Philip.

Norman was born on May 11, 1923, in Delmont, S.D., to Walter and Louise (Gerlack) Bierwagen. He was baptized, confirmed and attended church school through the fourth grade at Zion Lutheran Church in Delmont. He completed his education in the Delmont public school system. Norman was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Pierre.

Norman entered the United States Navy on March 16, 1945, from Douglas County. He served at Great Lakes Navy Pier in Chicago, Ill. Upon his discharge on August 10, 1946 as a World War II veteran, he returned to Milesville, S.D., where his parents had moved, and joined them in farming and ranching.

On February 14, 1962, Norman married Beverly Mickelson of Watertown, S.D. They had one son, James Walter, who died at birth. After his parents' passing, Norman continued farming the home place (always with John Deere machinery).

Norman enjoyed collecting miniature John Deere tractors even after his retirement from the farm. He also enjoyed music and was a member of the Philip City Band and the State American Legion Band, which played for State and National Legion Conventions.

Norman and Dorothy (Seward) were married on November 30, 1985, and retired to their home in Ft. Pierre. They enjoyed their time together, traveling and seeing many sights. They had the opportunity to experience a tour of Europe and were able to visit all 50 states in their motor home. They moved to Parkwood Retirement Home in 2002.

Due to failing health, Norman spent the last six months in the nursing home.

Norman is survived by his wife, Dorothy, of Pierre; a sister, Helen (Carroll) Peter, of Roseville, Minn.; a sister-in-law, Betty Bierwagen of Lisbon, N.D.; 13 nieces and nephews; his extended family, (Dorothy's children), Mary (Preston) Schultz of Aberdeen, S.D., Sheldon (Dru) Seward of Watertown, S.D., Kerwin (Khaing) Seward of Katy, Tex., and Lori (Dave) Ripley of Greeley, Colo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Beverly; his son, James Walter; his brothers, Hubert and Gilbert; and a sister-in-law, Edith Bierwagen.
