Norma M. Philips

Norma Marie Philips, age 91, of Murdo, SD, died March 16, 2008, at the St. Mary's Hospital in Pierre.

Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Wednesday, March 19, at St. Martin's of Tours in Murdo, SD, with Fr. Timothy Castor as celebrant.

Music was provided by Rose Comp, organist, and Deb Venard, vocalist. Ushers were Drew Venard, Kyle Venard and Brandon Kinsley. Pallbearers were Norma's grandsons, Bruce, Chris, David, Ed and Bob Venard and Tony Philips.

Interment will be at the Holy Name Catholic Cemetery in West Union, Iowa, at a later date.

Norma Marie Fritz was born August 11, 1916, on a farm in Fayette County, IA, the daughter of Ida Marie (Schnor) and Louis Fritz. She attended school in Alpha, Iowa.

In November 1936, she married Lawrence "Speed" Philips in West Union, IA. They moved to Decorah, IA, where Speed worked for a dry cleaner. In 1942, when WWII broke out, they went to San Diego, CA, where Speed worked in a Douglas Aircraft Factory. After that they moved back to West Union. Norma was a homemaker but did work part-time in a restaurant where she was a server in their banquet room. She always had a big garden and loved to raise flowers.

In the later years, they had a camper and enjoyed camping and fishing, and always went to northern Minnesota for a vacation of fishing with friends and family.

Her husband preceded her in death on March 4, 1986. Norma stayed in West Union for a while then moved to Cedar Falls, IA, where her son and daughter-in-law lived.

In 1990, Norma moved to Murdo, SD, and became very active in her church and the senior center.

Norma loved to play cards and was happy to play Saturday afternoons with the group from the center. She was an officer for the senior center for some time, and enjoyed working with the people there.

Survivors include her son, William Philips and his wife, Sherry, and one daughter, Barb Venard, all of Murdo; eight grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Along with her husband, Speed, Norma was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Louis Fritz, a son-in-law, Lyle Venard; a daughter-in-law, Cali Philips, one sister-in-law, Pauline McCart, and two brothers-in-law, Russell Bemis and Earl McCart.

Arrangements were with the Rush Funeral Home of Philip.
