Graveside services for Myrtle Renning Marskell, age 96, of Long Beach, CA, and formerly of the South Creek Community near Kadoka, SD, will be held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2008, at the South Creek Cemetery, north of Kadoka.
Myrtle Renning Marskell died August 28, 2007.
Myrtle Renning was born July 17, 1911, in South Creek, SD, the daughter of Andrew and Katie (Nelson) Renning, Norwegian immigrants who homesteaded there in the early 1900s.
Myrtle was one of nine children and grew up in the farming community, completing her high school education in Redfield while learning the printing trade. She worked as a printer in Philip, SD, and moved to Los Angeles in 1939 where she worked at the Herald Examiner.
She was united in marriage to Arthur Whitney in 1940. She resumed her printing career in 1947, working 30 years at the Independent Press Telegram until her retirement in 1977.
Myrtle's interests included traveling, gardening, and spending time with friends and family. She was active in the Sons of Norway and was a docent at Rancho Los Alamitos until shortly before her death.
Grateful for having shared her life are her four children, Art Whitney of Long Beach, CA, Pat Lampe of Huntington Beach, CA, Bob Whitney of Escondido, CA, and Ruth DeVoogd of Highlands Ranch, CO; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren; her stepchildren, Linda Savage, Lee, Jimmy and David Marskell; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Services are under the direction of the Rush Funeral Home of Kadoka.
