Mike Durkin, 50, of Ft. Pierre, died Tuesday, March 8, 2005, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.
Services were held Friday, March 11, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Ft. Pierre with burial in Ft. George Cemetery.
Michael Lee Durkin was born on June 20, 1954, to Elmer and Rosella “Sally” (Bode) Durkin, in Pierre, SD.
He lived his whole life on the banks of the Missouri River, in an area often referred to as Fort George. He attended LaRoche Bottom country grade school and then graduated from high school at Marty Mission in 1972.
In 1978, he married Pam Small and to this union three children were born: Jessica, Melissa and Philip. He loved taking them with him to feed the cows, check heifers and change the gates on the irrigation pipes. For relaxation, there was nothing better then taking the frypan to the fishing hole and cooking them as we caught them.
He always worked with cattle and the land. He grew corn, sunflowers, beans and spuds. And he loved the community get-together of branding and round-ups.
Mike served on the FSA Board, as their Minority Advisor and was a member of the Lower Brule Electron Board. But his greatest service was provided to all his friends. He always had time to help them out, whatever they were doing, and all he asked for in return was a Budweiser.
Wherever he went, Mike always managed to draw people to him. He entertained us with his stories and his great sense of humor and makeing everyone feel welcome and special.
He is survived by his wife and children; his mother and brother, Shane; and close cousins, Pat, Kathleen, Leo and Ellen Durkin; Shanie Wintersteen, Patty Madsen, Dick Eberlien and their families.
He was preceded in death by his father, a brother, Dwight, and an aunt, Lucille, who helped raise him.
Mike will be dearly missed by his family, neighbors and all those who called him friend.
