HOWELL, Mich. - Lyle Melvin, 87, passed away November 20, 2007, at his home in Howell, MI.
He was born July 29, 1920, in Wall, SD, to Patrick and Cecilia Melvin. He grew up on the family farm north of Wall.
He enlisted in the Marines during WWII and after receiving a medical discharge, went to Long Beach, CA, to join his fiancée and work in the shipyards. He was married to Gwenda Sieh on November 28, 1942, in Long Beach, CA. They were planning a celebration of their 65th wedding anniversary at the time of his death.
The couple farmed in the Wall area until 1959 when they moved with their four children to Rapid City. He was employed by Rounds Construction, Summit Construction and later by Barber Transportation from which he retired in 1983. For the next 21 years, the couple spent the summer months in Rapid City and the winters in Salton City, CA.
He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church and the Canyon Lake Senior Center.
He is survived by his wife, Gwenda; four children, Norman (Espi) Melvin of Minneapolis, MN, Gail (Claire) Melvin of Indianapolis, IN, Dee Gordon of San Diego, CA, and Carol (Sam) Jeffers of Howell, MI, nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and one sister, Cecilia Melvin of Wall.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Jerome and James; and three sisters, Bernice Meirose, Maurine Willuweit and Rose McDonnell.
