Lowell Ellis

Lowell Ellis, 83, Sturgis, died Saturday, April 23, 2005, at the Fort Meade VA Medical Center.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 2:00 until 7:00 p.m. with the family present from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. and Thursday one hour prior to the services at Kinkade Funeral Chapel.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 28, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel with Pastor Dennis Reich officiating. Burial with military honors by the Sturgis Veteran's Honor Guard will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery.

Lowell was born September 5, 1921, in Deadwood, SD, to Seth R. and Alma (Rantapaa) Ellis. He grew up in Deadwood and graduated from Deadwood High School in 1939. Lowell attended the University of Nebraska for two years until he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corp where he served for four years. He married Maxine Hillberg in 1946 and two daughters, Carol and Jeannie, were born. Lowell married Ann Berry in 1955 and two children, Peggy and Jim, were born. They lived in Deadwood and their blended family also included Diane (Berry) Ackerman and John Berry. In 1982, Lowell married Ruth North and they lived in Sturgis. Their blended family includes Jerry North, Janice Mikkelson, Ronald North, and Barb Ulferts.

Lowell was in the insurance business with his brother, Ken, and his father, Seth, until 1961 when he moved to Rapid City and went into business with his brother, Norman. He lived in Rapid City until 1968. He then moved to Philip, SD, where he sold insurance. It is also where he was instrumental in helping to get the Lake Waggoner Golf Course created.

In 1974, Lowell and his family moved to Spearfish and then to Lead in 1977 where he had his private insurance business until his retirement in 2001.

Lowell was a charter member of the VFW in Deadwood. He was a former member of the Elks, Jaycees, and the Tomahawk Country Club.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Ellis, of Sturgis; 10 children, James C. Ellis, Richmond, IN, John J. Berry, Chino, CA, Jerald North, Clayton, CA, Ronnie North, Montevideo, MN, Jeannie Rand, Bend, OR, Peggy Ellis, Highlands Ranch, CO, Diane Ackerman, Hillsboro, OR, Carol Ellis, Los Angeles, CA, Janice Mikkelson, Whitewood, SD, and Barb Ulferts, Montevideo, MN; one sister, Shirley Hosemann, Chula Vista, CA; 14 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

His parents, Seth and Alma Ellis; his former wife, Ann Ellis; two brothers, Ken Ellis and Norman Ellis; and one sister, Mary Harlan, preceded him in death.

A memorial has been established to the Fort Meade VA Medical Center Hospice Program.
