Local blood drive November 17

Local residents have the opportunity to celebrate life by joining in the community blood drive from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 17, at the Philip High School Fine Arts Building.

Not only will people get that great feeling of giving after donating blood, but will also be able to check their total cholesterol level. United Blood Services offers free cholesterol testing to blood donors. UBS does a total cholesterol test that allows donors to eat before the test, no fasting is required. Donors can check their confidential results at www.unitedbloodservices.org the week after their donation.

Thirty-seven percent of the population has O-positive blood, making it the most common type. Because of this, it is the type most used by patients needing transfusions. More O-positive donors are constantly needed. What is more, O-positive blood can be give to patients who have types A, B or AB-positive blood, but O-positive patients MUST have type O blood.

To schedule a donation appointment at the next UBS blood drive in your area, call Maureen Palecek at 859-2655, UBS in Rapid City at 800-834-8525 or go online to www.unitedbloodservices.org.
